     Painting, sculpture, printmaking, film and photography come together this year in an exhibition that captures the vibrant essence of Oaxaca and its relationship to cactus and edible insects in Cactus & Creatures. The exhibition features artwork by nineteen young emerging and established artists from both the UK and Mexico, hosted by ‘First Foods Residency’ a reciprocal, residency-based initiative for UK and Mexican artists responding to the integrity of native foods: corn, cacao, cactus, milk and honey.

     The exhibition features artists such as Stephen Chambers RA, Guillermo Olguin, Ross Fraser Mclean and Malo Farfan to name a few, and will be showing at The Koppel Project Hive in Holborn and The Koppel Project Baker Street from the 6th of October to the 4th of November 2017.

     The UK/MEX comparison affords the perfect platform for the First Food Residency project. The UK has a highly industrialised and processed food industry, distant from food cultivation, production, and even preparation, whereas Mexico in many parts of the country (particularly in rural areas) retains a ritualistic and life-affirming engagement with food and nature. These are the topics that inspire and lead the artwork of Cactus & Creatures.

     With the Art Out Loud 2017 festival presented by Chatsworth, arrives the première of Viva la vida con Frida, created and performed by the renowned Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanski and the internationally acclaimed violinist and vocalist Lizzie Ball. The show presents a musical journey that explores the life, art and fashion of Frida Kahlo (1907–1954), one of the 20th century’s leading female artists.

      Morgan Szymanski is known as one of the finest solo classical guitarists of his generation. He founded the non-profit venture PRISMA, providing arts workshops for children in Mexico, of which Lizzie is a proud ambassador.

     Lizzie’s career highlights include her creation of Classical Kicks – kaleidoscopic classical shows in Ronnie Scott’s and an annual festival in Derbyshire; as well as solo performances with Jeff Beck, Brian Wilson and Nigel Kennedy on international stages from Wigmore Hall to Madison Square Garden.

      On 26th of September the renowned Mexican artist, Teresa Rubio, will showcase her latest exhibition “Oneiric Realms” in the heart of London (25th – 29th September) at Zari Gallery. Recognised for her complex and insightful take on the principals of colour, Rubio’s work has travelled to respected venues in México, England, Denmark, Japan and France. Her art has been poetically classified as “informalism” because she concentrates in the ouster of forms and figures allowing the space to talk for itself.

     In Rubio’s own words, “Oneiric Realms” was born from her fascination with colours, textures, subtleties and light. Through these paintings, she extends an invitation to the viewers to explore the hidden world behind the apparent, travel across the spaces they see, feel the atmospheres and set their imagination free.

     The BFI London Film Festival is Britain’s leading film event and one of the world’s best and most established film festivals. This year for its 61st edition, the Festival will screen 242 feature films, from 67 countries, including 29 world premieres, 8 international premieres and 34 European premieres, along 12 days (4-15 October, 2017) those screenings will take place at exceptional venues across the capital, noteworthy the purpose-built venue at Victoria Embankment Gardens.

     The Mexican program consists of one feature film and one documentary, both entirely created and produced in Mexico:

• DEVIL’S FREEDOM, directed by Everardo Gonzalez (UK premiere)

    There is also a coproduction by Argentina-Brazil-Spain-The Netherlands-Mexico-Portugal-USA “Zama”, starred by renowned Mexican actor Daniel Giménez-Cacho and the American film “The Shape of Water” wrote, produced and directed by the BAFTA winner and internationally acclaimed Mexican Director Guillermo del Toro.
