Frida Escobedo to design the Serpentine Pavilion 2018

Mexican architect Frida Escobedo has become the youngest architect to design the Serpentine Pavilion in the Serpentine Gallery.

Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery invites one internationally awarded architect to create their first structure in the UK, by designing the Serpentine Pavilion. This pioneering commission has featured some of the biggest names in international architecture such as: Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Oscar Niemeyer y Bjarke Ingels.

Escobedo’s Pavilion takes the form of an enclosed courtyard, based on both, Mexico’s domestic architecture and British materials.

The installation is also a reference to the Greenwich Meridian, the global standard marker of time and geographical distance, presenting playful and original perspectives that invites the visitors to interact with time and space, sun and shadows, water and geometry.

Known for her work in urban reactivation, Frida Escobedo lectures internationally and has won several architecture prizes. In 2006, she founded her practice in Mexico City, with significant national projects including the Librería del Fondo Octavio Paz and an extension of La Tallera Siqueiros gallery in Cuernavaca. Today her designs have featured in Venice, Lisbon, San Francisco, London and New York.

Bosco Sodi presents “MURO” at London’s Art Night

Renowned Mexican artist Bosco Sodi is back in London for his first public performative installation, “Muro”, presented within the contemporary arts festival Art Night that puts art into extraordinary locations around London for one night a year.

"Muro" will be installed in the riverside square of the National Theatre on the South Bank. Sodi will build a 2 meter high by 8 meter long wall consisting of 1600 clay bricks, made in his studio in Oaxaca, Mexico, with the help of local artisans and signed by the artist. Once installed, passers-by will be invited to dismantle the wall brick-by-brick throughout the night, thus taking part of the artwork home.

Sodi, is known for his works based on raw materials, through which he creates a dialogue with natural elements, always in the interest of preserving a natural authenticity.

Art Night is curated by Hayward Gallery and Sodi’s participation is supported by Blain|Southern.

Conversation " Thinking Ibero-América: Latin America’s next generation of writers"

The Latin American writers, Emiliano Monge (Mexico), Liliana Colanzi (Bolivia), Claudia Ulloa Donoso (Peru), Felipe Restrepo Pombo (Colombia) and Carlos Fonseca (Costa Rica) will join translator Sophie Hughes in conversation, to address the challenges of Latin American literature and the role of Latin American writers on the global stage.

These writers are all part of the new Hay Festival Bogotá 39 selection of great writers under the age of forty from across Latin America. Each is published in a new collection of short stories, translated into English and published by Oneworld this June.

This event is part of Cervantes Institute London‘s Thinking Ibero-América series and is presented in partnership with Hay Festival, Oneworld Publications and English PEN, with the support of the Mexican, Colombian and Peruvian Embassies in the UK.

Split Wall: Mexican artist Pia Camil at Nottingham Contemporary

This summer, artist Pia Camil (Mexico City, 1980) is presenting her first solo exhibition in the UK. Graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design and the Slade School of Fine Art, Camil’s work has been exhibited in cities all around the globe such as New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Mexico City and more. This time Nottingham is next on the list and the installation will take place in one of the largest contemporary art spaces in the UK, Nottingham Contemporary.

Implementing playful architecture with textiles, ceramic masks and videos, the interactive yet socially critical installation aims to highlight the shortcomings of consumerism and globalization as well as its daily effects.

Two Master Chefs from Le Cordon Bleu Institute Mexico (Aldo Omar Morales and Cédric Carême) will host a Mexican cuisine demonstration on Tuesday 22nd May, at Le Cordon Bleu London.
