This summer, the Mexican Tenor Joel Montero Mena is making a comeback to the stages of London to perform alongside with the prestigious company “Opera Holland Park” the opera “Zazá”, written by the great composer and librettist Ruggero Leoncavallo. This is the third invitation to the tenor to participate in the company´s summer festival as a result of the success obtained in its two previous participations, particularly in 2015 with his interpretation in L'amore dei tre. Zazá is a long-awaited addition for this prestigious company and is part of its traditional romantic Italian operas, accompanied by an enriching orchestra ensemble and evocative dance styles. The opera follows the life of Parisian music hall singer, Zazà: her career, her eccentric friends and her passionate love affair with Milio, played by the Mexican tenor. The opera promises not only an intriguing and highly moving story, but also a magnificent lyric interpretation to the senses. An exceptional piece of its kind not to be missed.

Carlos Miguel Prieto and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

The prestigious Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto presents a series of concerts in the UK, leading the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO). Prieto will perform on April 8th at the Leeds Town Hall and the following day he will make his London debut at the Barbican Centre. |

Nowadays, Prieto is recognised as a highly influential cultural leader as well as being the leading Mexican conductor of his generation. He is the Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico (Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional), as well as the “Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería”, and artistic director of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas (YOA). His charismatic conducting style is characterised by its dynamism and the expressivity of his interpretations, leading him to major engagements and popular acclaim throughout North America and Europe. Prieto’s 2016-17 tour has also included performances throughout Europe, North America and Latin America.

As part of the artistic residency “Spring 2017 Postgraduate Residency”, the South London Gallery is pleased to present the first individual exhibition in the United Kingdom of the Mexican-American artist Alicia Reyes McNamara, “Nowhere Else”. |

Reyes McNamara’s promising practice and interesting proposal, which approaches narratives rooted in the current political climate in the United States, has earned her increasing recognition on the British art scene. Her work reflects a personal vision of the Mexican-American / Chicano identity translated through a British lens. Alicia has adopted a cartoon aesthetic with an ability to convey difficult issues and make them appear light and sometimes humorous, focusing on the changing identity of the Latin-American diaspora in the United States. Alicia Reyes McNamara recently received her MFA from the University of Oxford’s Ruskin School of Art, after completing her BFA at California College of the Arts. Her work has been included in Bloomberg New Contemporaries exhibition at the Bluecoat and ICA this year. Since its founding at the end of the 19th century as a public gallery and free library, the South London Gallery has maintained the mission of bringing art to the people of South London. The gallery promotes contemporary British and international visual art through an interconnected program of exhibitions, live art events, film screenings, artist residencies, outreach projects, education and outreach activities.

Exhibition Karla Leyva & Geneva Sills

Chalton Gallery presents the exhibition 'Karla Leyva & Geneva Sills'. The images included in the exhibition allude to the human body and its connection with states of mind. They show fragments of the female body along with other figures that carry a symbolic charge. The exhibition, curated by Paula Zambrano, brings together a selection of new and recent works by an artist based in Mexico City and another from Glasgow. Sills investigates questions of gender and sexual politics; her photos are charged with a flirtatious attitude, a sensual standpoint. A quiet and simple kind of eroticism, inspired by a single photograph produced by Paul Outerbridge. Leyva, on the other hand, is concerned with the formal expression of emotions and moods; her photos contain some kind of anxiety, a subtle pain. She is interested in the relation of volume and two-dimensional image. |
