Passport holders of Romania, wishing to travel to Mexico on holidays, seminars or conferences are exempted of visa and can be allowed to stay in the country up to 180 days.
This includes tourism, volunteering, studying courses shorter than 6 months, transit and attending business meetings, conferences, among others, as long as you are absolutely sure that no monetary earnings will be derived from your activities in Mexico.
To enter the country, visitors must fulfill the following requirements:
- A Passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of entry to Mexico.
- Immigration authorities may request additional information such as: main destination, hotel accommodation, return ticket, proof of financial means (international credit cards, debit cards or traveller's cheques, bank statements or cash covering the entire period of stay).
When you want to visit a friend residing in Mexico, you must present a letter of invitation from your friend.
A letter of invitation does not guarantee your entry to Mexico. Migration officers assess you to decide whether you meet the terms of Mexican's immigration law.
Your friend must send this letter (notarized) to you. The letter must include information about your friend: complete name, date of birth, address and telephone number in Mexico, job title, whether he/she is a Mexican citizen or permanent resident, a photocopy of a document proving his/her status in Mexico, such as: a passport, a Mexican citizenship card, if he/she are a naturalized citizen, or a permanent/temporary resident card.
The letter must include this information about you: complete name, date of birth, passport number, address and telephone number, your relationship to the person, the purpose of the trip, how long you will stay in Mexico, where you will stay, and how he/she (your friend) or you will pay for things, and when you plan to leave Mexico.

The Mexican migratory authorities have the faculty to grant or deny entry into Mexico if the visitor does not fully comply with the migratory regulations.

Business or technical visitor:
Romanian citizens do not require visa to go to Mexico in the following cases: if they travel to Mexico for business, attending conferences, seminars, courses, workshops or meetings and their stay does not exceed 180 days and they won’t receive any payment in Mexico for their activities and whether their activities within the company will be technical or limited to training and/or consultancy.
Nevertheless, the Migration Authorities at the airport may proceed with a second review and request other things such as: the address and length of stay in Mexico (hotel reservation, accommodation contract), the means of subsistence during the trip and the return flight ticket.
It is also advisable to bring the letters of both the company registered in Mexico and the one which employees the person in Romania.
The invitation letter has to include, without exception:
- The applicants’ full name and nationality;
- Name and address of the organization or private institution;
- Purpose of the organization or private institution;
- Full address and contact details of the organization or private institution;
- Information on the activities that the applicants will do within the organization or private institution;
- Estimated duration of their stay in Mexico (within 180 days);
- The written commitment that the organization or private institution will take over the maintenance of the foreign people during their stay in Mexico and their return to their country of origin, and
- Copy of the official identification with signature and photograph of the person that subscribes the responsive letter.
Original headed letter from the foreign company where the applicant works, stating the applicants salary, technical ability and that the applicant is going to be paid by the foreign company and is not going to receive any salary from a Mexican company or institution.
Student (for a stay in Mexico up to 180 days)
Passport holders of Romania, wishing to travel to Mexico o seminars or courses shorter than 6 months are exempted of visa.
To enter the country, visitors must fulfill the following requirements:
A Passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of entry to Mexico.
Immigration authorities may request additional information such as: main destination, hotel accommodation, return ticket, proof of financial means (international credit cards, debit cards or traveller's cheques, bank statements or cash covering the entire period of stay).
Original and copy of a letter of acceptance from an institution belonging to the National Education System, in which specifies:
- The applicant's full name and nationality;
- Level, grade and field of study that would be attended in Mexico;
- Name of the course or academic activity in which the person has been accepted;
- Starting and completion date;
- Tuition, and
- Identification and official registration of the academic institution.
The applicant must prove that he or she has enough funds to cover the study fees, housing expenses and general needs during the length of their stay, providing:
- Original and copy of investment proof or bank accounts with a monthly average balance equivalent to €2000 during the last three months, or
- Original and copies of the documents showing that the person has a job, pension or scholarship income equivalent to €1334 monthly, during the last three months.
Note: The solvency may be accredited by the applicant, by their parents, spouse, concubine or equivalent figure; or by the person exercising parental authority or guardianship, or letter from the educational institution attesting that the applicant has been granted with a scholarship or document from a bank or financial institution stating that the person has the funding.
Temporary Resident Visas
If the planned stay in Mexico exceeds 180 day and is less than 4 years, the person must apply for a long-term visa. Depending on the purpose, the person must comply with the following cases:
- Work Visa (INM Authorization required)
- Family reunification visa (for spouses and children)
- Temporary Resident Visa
- Ownership of Real Estate in Mexico
- Student Visa (for a stay in Mexico for more than 6 months)
- Investor Visa
