MEXICO NOMINATED AS THE ARMS CONTROL PERSON(S) OF THE YEAR 2017 BY THE ARMS CONTROL ASSOCIATION FOR ITS FIGHT ON THE PROHIBITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS

Mexico, together with Austria, Brazil, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as Ambassador Elayne Whyte of Costa Rica, have been nominated by the Arms Control Association to the "Arms Control Person(s) of the Year 2017 Award" for its leadership in the negotiations of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, adopted by the United Nations on 7th July of this year (Mexico signed the Treaty in the past 20th September  and, after the approval by the Senate of the Republic – 28th November -, soon it will be ratifiable).

Since 2007, the Arms Control Association annually nominates individuals or organizations whose actions have contributed to advance in issues of arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament or have helped raise awareness about the threats posed by mass destruction weapons. The Association was founded in 1971 and is recognized internationally for its research and analysis programs, as well as for its dissemination and promotion of effective policies for the control of weapons.

Regarding to this, it is emphasized that the voting is entirely open through the web page of the Association. The vote will conclude at 23:45 hrs. of 5th January 2018 (the results will be announced on 9th January).
