Mexico Re-elected to International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council

Mexico was reelected today to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, category "C", for the 2020-2021 period. The vote took place during the 31st General Assembly in London.

In the coming term and by coordinating with the Ministries of the Navy, as the national maritime authority; Communications and Transport; and Foreign Affairs, Mexico will continue working to strengthen international maritime cooperation for sustainable development and to protect the marine environment.

Mexico's re-election will allow it to continue backing measures to achieve an obstacle-free working environment for women in the maritime sector, as it has done in 2019, year of empowering women in the maritime community. Mexico is certain that the inclusion of women facilitates economic prosperity and benefits the global maritime community.

Mexico is a founding member of the IMO. It has played an active role on the council since 1978, and uninterruptedly since 1989. As a founding member of the IMO, and throughout its 59 years as a member, Mexico has been influential in contributing to developing and implementing international instruments and cooperation on security, marine environmental protection and training.

The IMO Council is made up of 40 member countries in three categories: "A" (10 States with the largest interest in providing international shipping services); "B" (10 other States with the largest interest in international seaborne trade) and "C" (20 States not elected under A or B that have special interests in maritime transport or navigation, and whose election to the council will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world). Press Release 432

Building a Gender Equality Network in the Maritime Community

Following the celebration of the World Maritime Day 2019 and with the aim of promoting the goals of the newly-established IMO Women’s Network, initiative launched by Canada early this year and later supported by Georgia with a second meeting, Mexico had the honour to invite the Permanent and Alternate Representatives to the International Maritime Organization to an information session and open dialogue regarding the efforts, initiatives and experiences in building a Gender Agenda that favours access to training and employment opportunities for women in the maritime sector, highlighting the key role of Member States and observer delegations contributions in this process.

Mexico as a large maritime nation with strategic bi-oceanic location, is convinced that the empowerment of women facilitates economic prosperity, fosters development and growth, and benefits the global maritime community. Therefore, with this session, Mexico would like to share its own experience in promoting women empowerment; extend the dialogue to all Member States and observer delegations; and present current actions that can lead to concrete initiatives to reach a barrier-free environment for women in the maritime sector.

The session was consist of five presentations by Permanent and Alternate Representatives to the IMO of Mexico, Ghana, Malta, Canada and Georgia, that conclude with an open dialogue among all participants.
