On March 1, 2023, Mexico and Guyana commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations, a journey that began in 1973 when both countries formally established their ties. Over the past five decades, the partnership between the two nations has grown steadily, based on shared values of mutual respect, cooperation, and a commitment to advancing regional and global development.
A Legacy of Cooperation
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, Guyana and Mexico have worked closely in several areas, fostering collaboration in trade, education, culture, and diplomacy. As members of regional organizations such as CARICOM and CELAC, both nations have advocated for stronger regional integration and have collaborated on issues like climate change, sustainable development, and food security.
Mexico has also played a significant role in strengthening Guyana’s human capital through scholarship opportunities and training programs. Similarly, Guyana has supported Mexico in its efforts to deepen ties with the Caribbean region, contributing to a mutually beneficial relationship.
Activities during the 50th Anniversary
During the commemorative ceremony for Mexico’s “Grito de Independencia,” Ambassador Mauricio Vizcaíno Crespo delivered a brief speech highlighting the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. During the event, Mr. Isidro Ubaldo Espinosa was honored with the 2023 Distinguished Mexicans Award. In April 2023, Maestro Ubaldo won Guyana’s 2022-2023 Innovation Award with his project on Green Biomaterial Blocks.
During the 50th anniversary, the embassy showcased Mexican cultural presentations at the Independence event. These presentations featured Mexican folklore dances performed by Mexican dancers who traveled specifically to showcase their traditional art.
Economic and Trade Links
The economic partnership between Guyana and Mexico has expanded in recent years, with both countries exploring opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and tourism. As Guyana continues to experience unprecedented economic growth due to its burgeoning oil and gas sector, there is potential for enhanced collaboration, particularly in energy and infrastructure development.
The 50th anniversary also sparked discussions about establishing the Mexico - Guyana Chamber of Commerce (MGCC). A significant upcoming events will be the official launching of the (MGCC) at the Guyana Energy Conference & Supply Chain Expo 2025, marking a major step in strengthening the relationship between Mexico and Guyana. The launch is expected to further encourage mutual cooperation and open new avenues for business partnerships, benefiting both nations economically.

On December 8, 2023, the Government of Guyana launched a postage stamp that represents the solid foundations of bilateral relations and the progressive advancement of the cooperation agenda between both countries.
