Building a Gender Equality Network in the Maritime Community

Following the celebration of the World Maritime Day 2019 and with the aim of promoting the goals of the newly-established IMO Women’s Network, initiative launched by Canada early this year and later supported by Georgia with a second meeting, Mexico had the honour to invite the Permanent and Alternate Representatives to the International Maritime Organization to an information session and open dialogue regarding the efforts, initiatives and experiences in building a Gender Agenda that favours access to training and employment opportunities for women in the maritime sector, highlighting the key role of Member States and observer delegations contributions in this process.

Mexico as a large maritime nation with strategic bi-oceanic location, is convinced that the empowerment of women facilitates economic prosperity, fosters development and growth, and benefits the global maritime community. Therefore, with this session, Mexico would like to share its own experience in promoting women empowerment; extend the dialogue to all Member States and observer delegations; and present current actions that can lead to concrete initiatives to reach a barrier-free environment for women in the maritime sector.

The session was consist of five presentations by Permanent and Alternate Representatives to the IMO of Mexico, Ghana, Malta, Canada and Georgia, that conclude with an open dialogue among all participants.
