The Instituto Cervantes London and The Centre of Mexican Studies UNAM present a talk about the life and work of Mexican author and photographer Juan Rulfo, commemorating the centenary of his birth.

A single book of short stories, “El Llano en Llamas” (The Burning Plain) (1953) and a single novel, “Pedro Páramo” (1955) sufficed to make Juan Rulfo (b. Jalisco, México, 1917, d. Mexico City, 1986) one of the most prominent authors of twentieth-century fiction in Spanish. His works, compelling in their depth and originality, occupy a foremost position within the Mexican canon. Juan Rulfo was also a gifted photographer whose pictures constitute a sensitive and inspired chronicle of the Mexico he lived in. The talk will be conducted by two renowned experts on Rulfo´s life and work: Alberto Vital is a professor and current Humanities Coordinator at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He is a specialist in the works of Juan Rulfo. “Noticias Sobre Juan Rulfo” (2017) his biography of Rulfo, is an essential reference in the field. Andrew Dempsey is an art curator and former Director of the Hayward Gallery. He has curated numerous important exhibits in the UK and abroad, including most recently El Fotógrafo Juan Rulfo at the Amparo Museum in Puebla, México.
