As part of the artistic residency “Spring 2017 Postgraduate Residency”, the South London Gallery is pleased to present the first individual exhibition in the United Kingdom of the Mexican-American artist Alicia Reyes McNamara, “Nowhere Else”. |

Reyes McNamara’s promising practice and interesting proposal, which approaches narratives rooted in the current political climate in the United States, has earned her increasing recognition on the British art scene. Her work reflects a personal vision of the Mexican-American / Chicano identity translated through a British lens. Alicia has adopted a cartoon aesthetic with an ability to convey difficult issues and make them appear light and sometimes humorous, focusing on the changing identity of the Latin-American diaspora in the United States. Alicia Reyes McNamara recently received her MFA from the University of Oxford’s Ruskin School of Art, after completing her BFA at California College of the Arts. Her work has been included in Bloomberg New Contemporaries exhibition at the Bluecoat and ICA this year. Since its founding at the end of the 19th century as a public gallery and free library, the South London Gallery has maintained the mission of bringing art to the people of South London. The gallery promotes contemporary British and international visual art through an interconnected program of exhibitions, live art events, film screenings, artist residencies, outreach projects, education and outreach activities.
