Promoting the Mexican gastronomy in the UK: This July #EatLikeaMexican

Mexican cuisine, both traditional and contemporary, is a cultural kaleidoscope incorporating elements that bring ingredients, knowledge, ancestral customs and diverse culinary techniques.

Contemporary Mexican cuisine is a delicious combination of pre-hispanic ingredients (maize, avocado, tomato, chilli, vanilla, squash, and cocoa, to name a few) and techniques with Spanish cooking.  The latter brought into the mix leading European culinary traditions and essential elements from Northern Africa, as well as others that had influenced their cuisine from the Far East. During the colonial period, more Asian foods were incorporated, like spices, mangos, tamarind and coconut. Also, from the 19th century on, multiple migrations enriched the human —and culinary— mosaic, including French, Italian, Lebanese, Jewish from various regions, Chinese, Japanese, to name a few.

Burritos, tacos and margaritas are already famous in the UK and, in some cases, they are part of the local diet. On another hand, wine, beer and Mexican spirits (Tequila and Mezcal) have gained international recognition and are also locally appreciated and consumed.

Therefore the Embassy of Mexico in the UK, in collaboration with several restaurants and bars, is launching the Mexican Food Week platform to promote the richness of Mexican flavours.
