Exhibition “Firerust”

Mario Castellanos and Sabino Guisu at Chalton Gallery

      Chalton Gallery presents the exhibition 'Firerust' by two artists from the Mexican state of Oaxaca,  Mario Castellanos and Sabino Guisu. Both are old friends and often work together, but this is the first time they have shown together in the UK. They have developed new work for this exhibition, exploring animalistic themes, both wild and mythical.

     Mario is a sculptor, finding scrap metal for his work, as well as using acids to create paintings in rust. It is traditional in Oaxaca to learn your trade from your parents, and Mario grew up working as a blacksmith with his father. This history is apparent in his sensitivity and confidence with metal. Mario is interested in the tactile qualities of his material; taking a hard cold piece of metal - bringing it to life by “softening it with heat and hands” - then moulding it into organic forms.

     Sabino comes from a long line of craftsmen. Mentored by prestigious artist and philanthropist Francisco Toledo. Sabino is famous for his 'smoke paintings,' where he uses gasoline smoke to create his bold designs. "When I first saw my grandparents heating the clay I was fascinated by the accidents that the fire provoked upon the vessels. I was captivated not only by the destructive power of the fire but also by the traces left behind by the smoke, the result of a controlled accident.”

     Chalton Gallery is a project space gallery in central London, which opened in July 2015. The programme is dedicated to showcase recent graduated and emerging artists based in The UK as well as artists from Mexico.
