The first London Design Biennale will take place this September at the Somerset House, with over 30 participating countries. The theme of this first edition is Utopia by Design, which celebrates the 500th anniversary of the publication of Utopia by Sir Thomas More (1516). Utopia will explore questions and ideas such as: sustainability, migration, pollution, energy, urban centres and social equality. |

The participating countries will have the opportunity to exhibit the best of their design talent and creative culture. The majestic Somerset House, one of the United Kingdom’s preeminent 18th century buildings, will serve as the official venue of the Biennale. Somerset House is one of London’s most visited sites, having historical, architectural and international importance, receiving 2.4 million visitors annually. Renowned Mexican architect, Fernando Romero, is in charge of the participation of Mexico with the idea of the “Border City”. The project explores a third form of urban typology – the hexagon – relying on an urban prototype that offers an innovative model for the developing world. The concept is rooted in the long history of places where frontiers meet, cities where cultures both clash and blend. In collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) and supported by HSBC and Shell.
