Damián Ortega was born in Mexico City in 1967. He is one of the most prominent artists of the new Mexican generation. This time, his work is characterized by prioritizing action over object, but certainly the importance of the materials is not refused. Ortega's work seeks to draw attention to the dynamism of the world around us, so he focuses on the forces of nature --water, air, earth and fire-- as independent phenomena, but also in its relationship to humankind. |

The Fruitmarket Gallery’s summer exhibition presents pieces by Damián Ortega, predominantly made of clay. The artist uses this most basic and elemental material to sculpt natural forms in opposition to instruments created by man, revealing the relationship of domination and erosion caused by mankind over the world for its own benefit. Also, Ortega shows several contrasts where the "primitive" and "sophisticated", the "uncivilized" and "civilized" as well as the "retreat" and "progress" are challenged. |

In that sense, the work of Ortega presented at The Fruitmarket Gallery transforms the place into a space of research, reflection and confrontation on a world constantly flowing and in transformation. Thus, clay --which in the artist's proposal is matter, energy and power--, is the actor who reveals the complexities of the world with the simplicity of its nature.
