Mexican artist Bosco Sodi presents at BLAIN|SOUTHERN Gallery in London his extraordinary Yūgen collection, which takes its title from the Japanese concept for aesthetic appreciation, referring to the subtle and hidden beauty that evokes feelings that are inexplicably deep and too mysterious to be described in words. The exhibition consists of rock sculptures and large-scale impasto paintings made with layers of pure pigment, water, glue and natural fibres. Sodi’s relationship with raw materials and natural elements draws from wabi-sabi, Japanese aesthetic philosophy that embraces the ability to find beauty in imperfection, and reveres natural authenticity.
Sodi was born in Mexico City in 1970 and is based in New York. He has had exhibitions at Pace Gallery (New York), Galería Hilario Galguera (Mexico City), Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso (Mexico City), Taka Ishii Gallery (Kyoto), Project B (Milan), and the Bronx Museum of the Arts (New York).
