+ Do I need a visa for Mexico?
WHO IS EXEMPT FROM A VISA TO TRAVEL TO MEXICO?
I. VISITORS (tourism, transit, and others) traveling to Mexico for stays of less than 180 days without engaging in paid activities and who meet any of the following five conditions:
1. Hold a valid passport from one of the countries exempt from visa requirements to enter Mexico, as published at the following link:

2. Hold a VALID PERMANENT RESIDENCE card from Canada, the United States of America, Japan, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, any of the countries that make up the Schengen Area, as well as Chile and Colombia.

3. Hold a VALID MULTIPLE-ENTRY VISA from Canada, the United States of America, Japan, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or any of the countries that make up the Schengen Area.
- or -
4. Hold an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) approved by Mexico.
- or -

If you do not meet any of the above conditions, you MUST apply for a visa to travel to Mexico.

Additionally, all foreign nationals who intend to engage in paid activities in Mexico must apply for a visitor visa with work permit.
II. APPLICANTS FOR TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT RESIDENCE BASED ON FAMILY TIES
Foreign nationals who DO NOT require a visa (see section "I. VISITORS (tourism, transit, and others)") may enter Mexico as tourists and apply for their residence at the National Migration Institute (INM) office after arriving in the country. Foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Mexico must apply for the corresponding visa at Mexican embassies or consulates abroad.
III. APPLICANTS FOR TEMPORARY RESIDENCE WITH OR WITHOUT WORK PERMIT, TEMPORARY STUDENT RESIDENCE, OR PERMANENT RESIDENCE FOR RETIREMENT
Foreign nationals who wish to enter Mexico to stay for more than 180 days with the intention of living, studying, or working, and who do not have family ties with Mexican nationals or foreign nationals with a visa or residence card, MUST obtain a visa. Once in Mexico, they must present themselves at the National Migration Institute office to exchange the visa for a residence card.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY FOR A VISA TO TRAVEL TO MEXICO?

Visitors
+ Visitor visa (tourism, transit, and others)
This visa is applicable for persons interested in visiting Mexico for stays not exceeding 180 days without performing paid activities; or for transit through Mexico.
The requirements for this procedure are:

- One color photograph (3x4 cm), front-facing, without glasses, white background
- Demonstrate financial solvency in the name of the applicant (one of the following options):
- Bank statements with an average monthly balance equivalent to at least MXP 79,764 in each of the last three months. You may present:
- Original bank passbook with a copy of each page; or
- Bank statement showing withdrawal and deposit transactions (NOT only the end-of-month balance). This document must bear the official bank stamp.
- Salary certificate equivalent to at least MXP 25,806 (after tax deductions) in each of the last three months. For this option, the applicant must prove having worked at the same company for a minimum period of one year. Must present:
- Salary certificate printed on letterhead, including employee tenure, the official company stamp, and the handwritten signature of the person who prepared the document. You can view a sample letter here ( Download here ).
- Copy of identification of the person who prepared the document.
- Scholarship certificate equivalent to at least MXP 15,249 in each of the last three months. You may present:
- University enrollment certificate printed on letterhead with official stamp.
- Scholarship certificate on letterhead with official stamp and signature of the person who prepared the document.
- Bank statements with an average monthly balance equivalent to at least MXP 79,764 in each of the last three months. You may present:
- Supplementary documents such as travel itineraries, hotel and flight information, etc.

- Each applicant must demonstrate financial solvency on their own, with the only exception being direct family members who are financially dependent. In the case of an applicant who is financially dependent on a foreign national holding a Mexican visitor visa (parents, spouses, or minor children), it is necessary to appear with the family member who proves any of these cases and submit the birth or marriage certificate, as applicable, translated, apostilled, or legalized by the corresponding Embassy of Mexico of the country where the document was issued. - In the case of an applicant who is financially dependent on a family member (parents, spouse, or children) of nationals who do not require a visa because there is an agreement or unilateral decision to waive visa requirements, they should submit financial solvency in the name of the family member. It is also necessary to appear with the family member who proves any of these cases and submit the birth or marriage certificate, as applicable, translated, apostilled, or legalized by the corresponding Embassy of Mexico of the country where the document was issued.
+ Visitor visa for family members of a foreign national who holds a visitor visa
This visitor visa without performing paid activities is applicable for spouses, parents, and minor children who are financially dependent on a foreign national holding a valid and current visitor visa with or without permission to perform paid activities.

+ Visitor visa for family members of Mexicans or foreigners with temporary or permanent residence
This visa is applicable for spouses, parents, children, and siblings who are minors and unmarried, of a Mexican residing abroad or of a foreign national holding a temporary or permanent residence card.
The requirements for this procedure are:

- Valid passport with a color copy

- For family members of Mexicans: proof of nationality of the Mexican family member (birth certificate or naturalization certificate) and their Mexican identification (passport, INE, etc.) with a color copy

+ Visitor Visa with Work Permit (NUT)
The visitor visa with work permit allows the applicant to travel to Mexico and perform paid activities for a period not exceeding 180 days.
Before attending the consular interview, a company or employer in Mexico must request a work authorization from the National Migration Institute (INM). Once the request has been approved by the INM, the employer will receive an authorization letter with a NUT (Unique Processing Number).
After receiving the NUT, the applicant must request an appointment at a Mexican embassy or consulate abroad to conduct the consular interview.

Temporary Resident
+ Temporary residence visa with work permit (NUT)
The temporary residence visa with work permit allows the applicant to travel to Mexico and perform paid activities for a period exceeding 180 days and up to 4 years.

+ Temporary residence visa without permission to perform paid activities - Through an invitation letter from a Mexican company
This type of visa is intended for applicants who do not have a pre-authorization issued by the National Migration Institute (INM). This visa allows stays exceeding 180 days and up to 4 years. This type of visa does not authorize the applicant to perform paid activities in Mexico.
The requirements for this procedure are:

- For non-Japanese nationals: valid Japanese visa or Zairyu Card with a color copy
- One color photograph (3x4 cm), front-facing, without glasses, white background
- Original invitation letter prepared by a company or institution in Mexico including the following information. View a sample letter (Download here):
- Full name and nationality of the applicant
- Name of the inviting institution
- If applicable, the official registration number of the inviting institution
- Purpose or business name of the institution
- Complete address and contact information of the institution
- Information about the activities the applicant will perform in Mexico. These activities must be related to the purpose or business name of the institution.
- Estimated duration or approximate start and end dates of the activities
- Statement of joint responsibility for the maintenance of the applicant during their stay in Mexico and commitment to timely return
- Copy of the passport of the person who signs the letter
- Demonstrate financial solvency of the company or institution in Mexico for the maintenance of the applicant through their bank statements with an average monthly balance equivalent to at least MXP 2,688,516 in each of the last twelve months. You may present:
- Original letter from the bank with information on the average monthly balance. This document must be made on letterhead with original stamp and handwritten signature of the person who prepared the document; or
- Bank statement that proves the average monthly balance with original bank stamp or QR code
- Employment letter or certificate proving that the applicant has the experience, ability, skills, or knowledge to carry out the activities to which they are invited

If the inviting institution does NOT take responsibility for the maintenance of the applicant, the applicant must demonstrate financial solvency through one of the following options:
- Bank statements with an average monthly balance equivalent to at least MXP 1,344,258 in each of the last twelve months. You may present:
- Original bank passbook with a copy of each page; or
- Bank statement showing withdrawal and deposit transactions (NOT only the end-of-month balance). This document must bear the official bank stamp
- Income certificate of at least MXP 52,785 (after tax deductions) in each of the last six months. Must present:
- Salary certificate printed on letterhead. Must include employee tenure, as well as the official company stamp and the handwritten signature of the person who prepared the document. You can view a sample letter here (Download here); and

This type of visa is intended for applicants who do not have a pre-authorization issued by the National Migration Institute (INM). This visa allows stays exceeding 180 days and up to 4 years. This type of visa does not authorize the applicant to perform paid activities in Mexico.
The requirements for this procedure are:

+ Temporary residence visa for students
The temporary residence visa for students is applicable for persons who will study at an educational institution registered in the National Education System in Mexico for a period exceeding 180 days and up to 4 years.
The requirements for this procedure are:

- One color photograph (3x4 cm), front-facing, without glasses, white background
- Original acceptance letter from an educational institution registered in the National Education System in Mexico including the following information:
- Full name and nationality of the applicant
- Level, degree, and area of study
- Name of the course to which they have been accepted
- Course start and end date
- Cost of tuition for the course
- Complete address and identification data of the educational institution
- Demonstrate financial solvency (one of the following options):
- Bank statements with an average monthly balance equivalent to at least MXP 268,617 in each of the last three months. You may present:
- Original bank passbook with a copy of each page; or
- Bank statement showing withdrawal and deposit transactions (NOT only the end-of-month balance). This document must bear the official bank stamp.
- Income certificate equivalent to at least MXP 25,806 (after tax deductions) in each of the last three months. Must present:

- Persons under 25 years of age can demonstrate financial solvency through their parents. In this case, in addition to the documents mentioned in point 6, the applicant must submit a certified copy of birth certificate to prove relationship with their parents. For Japanese nationals, it is necessary to submit the Koseki Tohon with a translation to Spanish or English.

+ Temporary residence visa for family members of a foreign national holding a temporary residence visa
This temporary residence visa is applicable for:
1) Spouse, parents, and unmarried minor children of a foreign national holding a valid and current temporary residence visa with or without permission to perform paid activities;
2) Spouse, parents, and unmarried minor children of a foreign national holding a valid and current temporary residence student visa; and
3) Spouse of a foreign national holding a valid and current permanent residence visa.
This visa allows stays exceeding 180 days and up to 4 years. This visa does not authorize the applicant to perform paid activities in Mexico unless they directly request a work permit from the National Migration Institute.
The requirements for this procedure are:
