The Embassy of Mexico in India held a special screening of the triple Oscar award-winning film, ROMA, within the framework of International Women’s Day.
The Embassy of Mexico in India in collaboration with the India International Centre, New Delhi organised a special screening of "ROMA" by Academy Award winning director, Alfonso Cuarón, within the framework of International Women’s Day, followed by an engaging and thought-provoking panel discussion on the topic, “The 'Other' in the Family: A Discussion on Domestic Workers”.
"Roma" is a 2018 drama film written and directed by Oscar winning Mexican director, Alfonso Cuarón, who also produced, shot, and co-edited it. This film made history this year by becoming the first Mexican entry to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and it also won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography and Best Director. Set in 1970 and 1971, Roma, which is a semi-autobiographical take on Cuarón's upbringing in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City, follows the life of a live-in housekeeper of a middle-class family.
The panel comprised renowned social worker, Ms. Renana Jhabvala, who is also associated with SEWA and involved in policy issues relating to poor women and the informal economy; writer and co-founder of Kali for Women, India’s first feminist publisher, Ms. Urvashi Butalia; and Delhi-based filmmaker, social activist and founder of SMART NGO, Ms. Archana Kapoor speaking on the significance of the film in India and discussing the challenges faced by domestic workers in the country.
The special screening and subsequent panel discussion was well-attended by film lovers, human rights activists, experts working in the field of women’s rights and members of the diplomatic community.
