ON MARCH 5TH THE DEPUTY HEAD OF MISSION OF THE EMBASSY OF MEXICO IN HUNGARY, CÉSAR OCARANZA INAUGURATED THE “ANGELS AND SKULLS” EXPOSITION OF ANNAMARÍA BŰDY ROCHÁNÉ
With the title of “Angels and skulls – paper decorations for annual Mexican holidays” on March 5th, the exposition of the Hungarian university professor and toy investigator, Annamaría Bűdy de Rocha, wasinaugurated by the Deputy Head of Mission, César Ocaranza, and the General Director of the Ethnographic Museum, Lajos Kemecsi. Annamaría Bűdy de Rocha, who has lived in Xalapa for 35 years with her husband investigating the socio-cultural importance of toys, recognized the important function that paper decorations have for the Mexican culture.
This extremely interesting material was given by the professor and investigator Annamária Büdy Rocháné to the Ethnographic Museum in 2015 and now its enriched versión will be exhibited on the occasion of the Ethnographic Museum Day, an event that will take all day with a series of activities.
The current exhibition presented a collection of more than 200 pieces. The exposed objects represent the annual holidays related to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the National Day of Mexico, the offerings of the Day of the Dead, the Birth Anniversary of Benito Juárez, just to mention some topics that is part of the nature of Mexican people.
Meanwhile Annamaria, the collector took the floor and explained that she is not an artist, the fervor of collecting for her is rather a mission, (adding that she is a linguis) seeking to safeguard the pre-Columbian motifs that survive in the current popular representations. At the end of the event Ms. Annamaria Rocha made a guided tour throughout her works (photos, films and video recordings) with very detailed explanations that were very successful among the guests.
It should be stressed, however, that it is not the first time that the profesor donates her collection to Hungarian museums. For instance, she has given a series of very important antique toys to the Szorakaténusz Museum of Kecskemét.
