The Embassy of Mexico in the US informs that on October 13 and 14, 2021, Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma will carry out a working visit to Phoenix, Arizona, in order to meet with community leaders and representatives of migrant communities with the firm commitment to learn more about their needs and to advance their empowerment through the facilitation of health and educational services that favor their protection and inclusion.

In this context, Ambassador Moctezuma will participate in events and mechanisms that account for the broad binational cooperation on health issues for the benefit of our migrant communities. Such as his participation in the inauguration of the XXI Binational Health Week (BHW), accompanied by Luis Gutiérrez, head of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME, for its acronym in Spanish); Jorge Mendoza, Consul General of Mexico in Phoenix; Martha Caballero, lead of the General Direction of International Relations at the Ministry of Health; and the ministries of Health of the states of Sonora, Baja California, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Chihuahua.

The BHW has stood out for being one of the most important institutional efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the IME, which in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the network of 50 consulates in the United States have facilitated access to advising, information and health services for the Mexican community in the United States.

Likewise, the relaunch of the National Coordination of the Health Windows Initiative stands out as a way to continue expanding the scope of services aimed at the prevention and health care of the migrant population. Ambassador Moctezuma will also participate in a session of the Mexican section of the United States-Mexico Border Health Commission, a binational body that identifies, evaluates and facilitates actions to address health problems affecting border populations.

The agenda also includes meetings with state and local political figures such as the Mayor of Phoenix Kate Gallego, and members of leadership of the Arizona State Legislature. In a meeting with the consuls of Mexico in Arizona, Ambassador Moctezuma will seek to coordinate strategies that aim to improve the scope and consular services in the state.

The Ambassador will lead relevant meetings with state academic authorities, such as the Arizona State University and the Thunderbird School of Global Management, to continue promoting cooperation in key areas of knowledge, innovation and community service.

With this visit, Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma reaffirms his commitment to get closer to the Mexican communities living in the United States, learn about their needs firsthand and strengthen alliances with key stakeholders that contribute to their empowerment through health, forming more resilient communities before the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
