Press Release No. 012

Washington, D.C., October 12th, 2021

The splendor and cultural greatness of Oaxaca will have an important presence in the United States

The Embassy of Mexico in the United States announces an extensive program to promote the cultural greatness of Oaxaca in the United States, its economic reactivation and tourism activity, among other aspects, from October 22 to November 20, 2021.

As part of the commitment to promote the cultural richness of all the states and regions of Mexico in the United States, as well as to strengthen the promotion of tourism and the well-being of our populations, the Embassy of Mexico in the United States will present an extensive program to display the most outstanding cultural, social, touristic and economic aspects of Oaxaca from October 22 to November 20, 2021

In recognition of its rich cultural projection worldwide and the important presence of the Oaxacan community in the United States, Oaxaca will be the first state to be part of the initiatives promoted by the Embassy that seek to combine cultural activities with economic, tourist and academic promotion events.

The “Oaxaca in the United States” program will comprise the following elements:

  • On October 22, the “Oaxaca in the United States” celebration begins with the placement of two giant Alebrijes from San Martín Tilcajete at the Rockefeller Center in New York.
  • From October 26 to November 20, the activities of the program will be carried out in Washington, D.C., including the installation of a colorful Day of the Dead altar at the Mexican Cultural Institute, the traditional Guelaguetza celebration and other exhibits that will showcase the most representative elements of the Oaxacan culture.
  • Key sectors of the Oaxacan industry, such as the mezcalero and coffee growers, will be promoted through working meetings with various business organizations and other stakeholders.
  • Meetings will be carried out with US entrepreneurs, business associations and think tanks, such as the US Chamber of Commerce and the Atlantic Council, in order to promote investment and strategies that encourage economic growth and the creation of jobs in the state.
  • The “Family Guelaguetza” program will be also presented, which will allow for the reunification of immigrants with their parents or grandparents that they have not seen in at least 20 years.
  • Oaxaca tourism will be widely promoted by sharing its vast culinary heritage including mezcal tastings and other traditional dishes. Academic cooperation between the most recognized institutions to facilitate scientific and technological exchange will be sought and strengthened.

“Presenting the greatness of a state as vast as Oaxaca fills me with pride as the Ambassador of Mexico to the United States. This program is just the beginning of a broader journey that we want to share with the American people through the cultural mosaic that Mexico represents. For this reason, I thank Oaxaca for joining this great effort. I am confident that with its art, culture and traditions Oaxaca will amaze everyone,” -- Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma.

The full program of activities will be announced soon through the social networks of the Embassy of Mexico in the United States and the Mexican Cultural Institute.
