The Ambassador of Mexico to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, arrived today at the Albuquerque International Sunport, where he began his official agenda in the state of New Mexico. He was welcomed by Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller; Airport Director Richard McCurley; Deputy Director of Innovation Manny Manriquez; and the Consul of Mexico in Albuquerque, Patricia Pinzón.

His visit comes just days after the launch of the new direct flight between Washington, D.C. and Albuquerque, operated by United Airlines. This new route marks a significant step toward the internationalization of the airport and enhanced connectivity for the region.

During his tour of the airport facilities and subsequent working meeting, Ambassador Moctezuma and local authorities agreed on the importance of maintaining dialogue with the tourism sector and airlines to explore the potential for future routes between Mexico and New Mexico, as well as joint efforts in economic development, tourism, and binational mobility.

“It is an honor to welcome Ambassador Moctezuma to the Sunport and to celebrate this new connection to the nation’s capital with this brand new United nonstop flight to Dulles, said Airport Director Richard McCurley.

“Ambassador Moctezuma has been a strong ally to New Mexico, and his visit reaffirms the lasting bond between us,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We’re grateful for his continued support and welcome him to Albuquerque”.

“I congratulate the Albuquerque International Sunport on its new direct route to Washington, which I had the pleasure to use,” said Ambassador Moctezuma Barragán. “I’m aware of the ongoing conversations to establish a direct route with Mexico as well. We’re here to support that dialogue and to promote more of Mexico in New Mexico, and more of New Mexico in Mexico.”

During his visit to New Mexico, Ambassador Moctezuma will be accompanied by the Consul of Mexico in Albuquerque, Patricia Pinzón. His tour includes meetings with the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, members of the New Mexico Legislature and Executive Branch, the leadership of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, and organizations dedicated to defending the rights of the migrant community in the state. He was invited as the keynote speaker at the summit of the World Affairs Councils, hosted by Global Santa Fe.

This visit comes at a pivotal moment in the U.S.-Mexico bilateral relationship, and of decisions that affect the bilateral relation and the migrant community such as the proposed tax to remittances, which Mexico opposes. The Ambassador, while visiting New Mexico, reaffirms the shared commitment between Mexico and New Mexico to take their friendship to unprecedented heights.
