Award Types

Fifteen scholarships are available for study or research at the master's, doctoral or postdoctoral level in all fields with the exception of dentistry, plastic surgery, marketing, accounting, advertising, and business administration. Scholarships are also offered for specialization or medical specialization courses.

Candidates who do not meet Spanish language requirements will be eligible for 6-months of Spanish language training before the start of postgraduate courses. This language training will be provided in public institutions designated by the Secretaria de Relaciones Exteriores. This language training is subject to a letter of acceptance for graduate studies by a university included in the Mexican Grant Program.

Award Value

Duration

Varies on the level and program of study:

  • 1 year for specialization studies.
  • 2 years for M.A. studies.
  • 3 years for Ph.D. studies.
  • 3 years for medical specialties and subspecialties.
  • up to 12 months for postgraduate research and postdoctoral stays.
  • 3 to 5 months for study/research towards a degree in Canada.
  • 6 months of Spanish language training.

Scholarships are tenable for the start of the September 2011 academic year. This scholarship may not be extended.

Background

The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offers scholarships for study or research at the master's, doctoral or postdoctoral level and for specialization or medical specialization courses.

These scholarships are offered on the basis of reciprocity (fixed number of scholarships for each country) or within the frame of a scholarship pool (scholarships without fixed distribution by country).

Student

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be Canadian citizens, permanently residing in Canada by the competition deadline.
  • Hold the equivalent of an undergraduate and/or graduate degree from a recognized Canadian institution (as required by degree program for which the scholarship is requested).
  • Have a minimum grade average of 8 on a 0-10 scale (equivalent to a B grade).
  • Make the necessary contacts to secure acceptance documents.
  • Be under 35 years of age when applying (1.1.1974 and younger). Applicants over 35 years of age and applying to a Master's degree will be considered in exceptional cases.
  • Submit all required documentation (see below).
Conditions
  • Scholarships granted are subject to final acceptance by a university included in the Mexican Grant Program. Please note: not all the programs listed are applicable to Canadian citizens.
  • No changes (tenure, host institution, etc.) are permitted once the scholarship has been awarded and accepted by the applicant.
  • Applicants applying for postdoctoral research must submit documentary proof of a Doctorate degree.
  • This scholarship is non-transferable.

How to Apply

Note: This is a two-step process. First, applicants must complete the Online Application and then the Mexican application available in Adobe PDF. Applicants are required to send to CBIE the Mexican application along with all supporting documents.

Step One: CBIE APPLICATION

Applicants must complete the Online Application.

  • Enter your data in the fields provided, following the instructions for each item.
  • Upon completion, verify your data prior to submitting.
  • To obtain a hard copy for your records, prior to submitting, print the form using the print function on your browser. Note that CBIE does not require a hard copy.
  • SUBMIT to provide your application electronically to CBIE. Applicants will receive confirmation by email when submitted.
  • All application materials can be submitted in English or French.

Applicants are required to submit the following supporting documents to complete the application process:

  • Signed "Declaration by Applicant" found at the end of the online application.
  • Privacy Notice Statement - Foreign Government Awards found at the end of the online application.
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship: one certified copy of the following: birth certificate, citizenship card or passport (do not include original documents); a certificate of baptism is not accepted as proof of Canadian citizenship.
  • Official transcript (one) of ALL post-secondary studies to date (COMPLETE academic record(s) including College of Applied Arts and Technology-CAAT and CEGEP) Note: transcript(s) must be submitted in sealed envelopes or sent directly to CBIE at the address provided below.
  • Three original letters of recommendation (at least one must be from an academic source, i.e. professors). Note: letters must be submitted in sealed envelopes or sent directly to CBIE at the address provided below.
  • Curriculum Vitae (must not exceed 8 pages).
  • Certified copy of the diploma (notarized by Notary Public or stamped by the university that issued it) for the highest degree obtained.
  • Proof of registration for studies in progress, including courses being taken (if applicable).
  • Certificate of admission from the host institution or copy of correspondence testifying that you have requested admission or that you will have access to the facilities needed to complete the proposed research project.
  • Eight recent passport-size photographs. Write your full name and nationality on the back of each photograph.
  • If applicable: Two sets of artwork samples for applicants in Fine Arts, Music and Architecture. Applicants in the history or theory of art, music, or architecture are not required to submit samples.

Artwork samples required are as follows:

  • Applicants in the Fine Arts * (painting, graphic arts, sculpture and photography) must submit up to 20 slides of 20 original works. Film-makers and video artists must submit at least one recent film, indicating when it was made, how the applicant was involved in its production and the running time. These must be provided on CD/DVD, be dated, and clearly identified with the applicant's name.
  • Applicants in Music * must submit CDs of three works totaling no more than 30 minutes. The recordings of singers and instrumentalists must be chosen from three different musical periods, except in the case of Baroque musicians, who must include movements from three different types of pieces. Piano accompaniments may be included. Composers must submit scores and recordings of three different types of works composed by them. All recordings must begin with a spoken declaration by the applicant's music professor that the samples on the recording were performed or written by the applicant and are unedited.
  • Applicants in Architecture * must submit up to 10 reproductions of drawings, provided on CD/DVD.

* Only samples as specified above will be presented to the selection committee.

Step Two: MEXICAN GOVERNMENT APPLICATION

Applicants must complete the Mexican Government Application (Form A or Form B) in either English or Spanish and submit all documents listed at the end of the form with the exception of any documents already submitted as part of Step One.

Deadline

Complete application (Step 1 and Step 2) must be submitted to CBIE by 11:59 p.m. EST, November 1, 2010. Supporting documents must be postmarked on or before this date.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that supporting documents are submitted by the deadline. The selection committee will not accept incomplete files. All required information must appear in the space provided: supporting documents other than those SPECIFICALLY requested will not be accepted. Applications and documents submitted past the deadline will not be accepted.

We strongly recommend that you collect all the required supporting documents in sealed envelopes and send them to CBIE in one package by a method which will provide you with confirmation of its delivery, such as courier service or registered mail.

If you are unable to collect all the required supporting documents, please ensure that your referees and institution(s) issuing transcripts submit the documents directly to CBIE by the deadline.

Notification

Applicants will be contacted in mid-December by CBIE regarding the status of their application.

Final Selection

The final selection of scholarship recipients is made by the host country and is communicated to CBIE in January 2011.

Notification will also be sent out by the host country to successful candidates at the same time period.

Selection for the scholarship is subject terms of conditions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Mexico.

Disclaimer

The Canadian Scholarship Selection Committee is not able to provide feedback for unsuccessful candidates.

Applications submitted directly to the Embassy of Mexico or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not be considered.

Applications and documents submitted to CBIE will NOT be returned.

Scholarships are subject to the availability of funding.
