FOREIGN SECRETARY CLAUDIA RUIZ MASSIEU STRENGTHENS MEXICO’S RELATIONS WITH THE WORLD DURING HER VISIT TO THE U.N.
While in New York for the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu held meetings with the Foreign Ministers of countries of priority for Mexico in order to strengthen our international relations.
She met with Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo of Spain, a country of fundamental strategic importance to Mexico. The two officials discussed various topics, including: the 12th meeting of the binational commission, to be held in Spain next year; updating the legal framework between Mexico and the European Union; Spain's role as an observer member of the Pacific Alliance; Ibero-American cooperation; the migrant situation in Europe; and the upcoming participation of Mexico and Spain in the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held in Paris.
Foreign Secretary Ruiz Massieu also met with Norwegian Foreign Minister Børge Brende to discuss various multilateral issues as well as Mexico’s interest in forging closer economic and political ties and strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
The Foreign Secretary also met with the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, to evaluate the bilateral relationship. During the meeting, the Foreign Secretary was witness of honor at the signing of the contract to donate resources for the "Bridge Replacement and Cumberland River Embankment Protection" cooperation project in which the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) will act as a financial intermediary.
In a meeting with the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the two officials welcomed the high level of the bilateral dialogue and discussed business opportunities between Mexico and the United Arab Emirates. The Sheikh again invited the President of Mexico to make a State visit to the UAE, a sign of the stronger bilateral relationship.
With Carl B. Greenidge, Vice President and Foreign Minister of Guyana, the Foreign Secretary discussed regional and multilateral issues, including: the Open Government Partnership, chaired by Mexico; the Second Regional Conference on Population and Development to be held in Mexico; and climate change. Both officials expressed their interest in strengthening the ties between the two countries.
Lastly, the Foreign Secretary talked with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh about the bilateral relationship, expressing the interest of the Mexican government in expanding political and economic cooperation with Jordan and stressing the importance of making progress with the negotiations on a bilateral Free Trade Agreement. The two officials signed two Memoranda of Understanding: the first for the establishment of a mechanism to discuss issues of common interest and the second for academic and diplomatic cooperation.
