Sheffield Doc / Fest is the UK’s premier documentary festival, celebrating the art and business of documentary. In addition to screenings, it includes discussion panels and masterclasses, as well as events intended to connect creatives with industry delegates. The festival intends to promote new talents and is at the forefront on digital and interactive programming, including virtual reality.

This edition of the festival features two Mexican documentaries:

José Villalobos presents his first documentary “El charro de Toluquilla”, the story of an HIV positive mariachi singer fascinated by the braggart and a womanizer characters of vintage Mexican cinema. He must choose between keeping this fantasy lifestyle and raising his little daughter, who was miraculously born without the virus. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with José Villalobos & Jaime García Dominguez.

For more than 20 years, acclaimed photographer-turned-filmmaker Maya Goded has documented intimately the life of a community of sex workers in Mexico city. ”La plaza de la Soledad”  shows the personal histories of this group of women whom with dignity and good humour, keeps fighting for a better life and  for the chance to find real love. This screening will be followed by a Q&A.

 3.- Miguel López Valdivia presents the short film “Burnout”, the portrait of a paramedic and his relationship with death. The film describes a duel between the deep pleasure that gives him the adrenaline when he turns on the siren of his ambulance, and the emotional weariness from being the witness of countless tragedies.
