LONDON, United Kingdom, April 1, 2023- In the presence of more than three hundred guests and more than 60 emerging artists, the Ambassador of Mexico to the United Kingdom, Josefa González-Blanco Ortíz-Mena, inaugurated the art exhibition, "I PRESENT: Stories of the Mexican Diaspora living in the UK. An Art Exhibition". In her welcoming words, she called on the Mexican-British binational community to take advantage of the power of art to transform, break boundaries, find intersections, and continue working with the Embassy of Mexico to promote cultural dialogue between Mexico and the UK.

This exhibition explores the artistic manifestations of the Mexican diaspora in the UK on issues related to their experiences and interpretations of what it is like to migrate from Mexico to the UK.  The artworks explore a range of issues related to their migration experience. Some of the issues included cultural identity, displacement, belonging, homesickness, and the challenges of adapting to a new environment.

In the heart of Belgravia in London, the Mexican Embassy's 'Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz' cultural pop-up, named after the renowned Mexican poet, is the setting for this exhibition this March 2023. The space serves as a meeting point and creative platform for our communities. In addition, various cultural activities are carried out throughout the year to strengthen the presence and cultural connectivity between Mexico and the United Kingdom.

The open call for artists was launched on social media in January and February 2023 and an overwhelming amount of Mexican talent sprouted from across the UK.

The art pieces submitted for the exhibition are a diverse and vibrant expression of each artist’s experiences and feelings about living in a different country. Through various techniques such as sculpture, painting, weaving, embroidery, photography, and performance, these artists convey their cultural identity and the challenges of navigating a new environment. Some use vibrant colours and bold forms to celebrate their heritage and express a sense of belonging, while others use more subdued tones and abstract shapes to convey feelings of displacement or longing. Each technique offers a unique way for Mexican artists in the UK to express their emotions and experiences in a way that is both personal and universal.
