LONDON, United Kingdom, 20th April 2016.- The British organisation Grassroot Diplomat honoured the Ambassador of Mexico to the United Kingdom, Diego Gomez-Pickering, with the “Initiative Award 2016” in recognition for being an exemplary diplomat by actively championing a cause for the betterment of society on a local, regional, national or international level as a policy driver.

In a ceremony celebrated at the Mayfair Hotel, attended by hundreds of diplomats from around the world, representatives from the Embassy of Mexico received the award on behalf of the Mexican diplomat, who was at that time presenting himself before the Commission of Foreign Affairs of the Senate, in Mexico City, in order to explain his work-plan due to his eventual ratification as General Consul of Mexico in New York.

The specialised magazine also nominated Ambassador Gomez-Pickering for the second year-in-a-row to the Grassroot Diplomat Award for his leading role through the Year of Mexico in the United Kingdom, celebrated in 2015, which covered 140 economic, academic and cultural activities.

It is noteworthy to mention that just a week before -11th April- the British magazine DIPLOMAT, focused in foreign affairs and diplomatic missions, granted to Ambassador Gomez-Pickering the award as the “Diplomat of the Year of North America and the Caribbean”, for his outstanding performance in the UK. 

Gomez-Pickering was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland by the President of Mexico and was ratified by the Senate in December 2013. On 13th May 2014 he presented his letter credentials to Queen Elizabeth II.

Diego Gómez Pickering is an internationalist, journalist and writer, he has been as a consultant for different UN agencies such as UNESCO, the United Nations’ Public-Private Alliance for Rural Development, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Office for Humanitarian Affairs Coordination (OCHA) and the Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
