“VISITING CHAIR” PROMOTES ACADEMIC COOPERATION BETWEEN MEXICO AND THE UK
- 24 institutions of higher education from Mexico and the United Kingdom will participate in a mobility programme of academics, specialists and researchers.
- This programme will allow to deepen academic bonds in areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM), Arts, Humanities and Social Science.
Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, 7th December 2015.- As part of the Dual Year celebrated between Mexico and the United Kingdom, the Mexican Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AMEXCID) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a consortium of 12 Higher Education Institutions (IES, for its acronym in Spanish) from Mexico and the UK, signed the MoU for the implementation of the “Visiting Chair Mexico-UK”. The event in the framework of the 29th Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), which featured as Guest of Honour this year the United Kingdom.
The Visiting Chair consists that academics and researchers from 24 IES of Mexico and the United Kingdom impart lectures and conferences for 2 weeks, in both sides, in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), arts, humanities and social Sciences. This effort helps to generate and disseminate knowledge and aims to promote joint research that gives as a result academic articles.
The participating institutions from Mexico are positioned within the best Mexican IES, based on the QS Latin American University Rankings, and they are the National Polytechnic Institute, the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, the Autonomous University of Baja California , the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, the Autonomous University of Yucatan, the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, the Autonomous Metropolitan University, the University of Guadalajara, the University of Guanajuato, the University of the Americas- Campus Puebla, Iberoamericana University- Campus Mexico City and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Participating institutions from the UK are ranked among the top 200 universities in the world, which according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities are King's College London, University of Bristol, University of Birmingham, University College London, University of Durham, University of Edinburgh, University of Leeds, University of Manchester, University of Nottingham, University of Sheffield, University of Southampton and University of Warwick.
During the first two years, the National Coordinators of each country will be King’s College London and the University of Guadalajara; this last is where the MoU will be signed.
The completion of this project counted with the support of the Embassy of Mexico in the United Kingdom, the UK diplomatic mission in Mexico and British Council-Mexico.
The signing ceremony, on 29th November, was attended by the Ambassador of Mexico, Diego Gomez-Pickering; Ambassador of the United Kingdom, Duncan Taylor and Baroness Jane Bonham Carter of Yarnbury, Trade Envoy of Prime Minister David Cameron to Mexico, as well as The General Director of FIL, Marisol Schulz; the Provost of the University of Guadalajara, Tonatiuh Bravo Padilla; the Provost of the Autonomous Metropolitan University, Salvador Vega y Leon; the Director General of the National Polytechnic Institute, Enrique Fernandez Fassnacht and the Director General of Technical and Scientific Cooperation of the AMEXCID, Martha Navarro Albo, among others.
The "Visiting Chair Mexico-UK" will launch its first call in early 2016, and will be held for five years.
