MEXICO AND THE UK PROMOTE LAW ENFORCEMENT COOPERATION
LONDON, United Kingdom, 12th February 2016.- The Attorney General of Mexico, Arely Gomez-Gonzalez, accomplished a three day working visit in which she met with Parliament Members, representatives of the law enforcement agencies of the British government, as well as human rights promoters.
The head of the Attorney’s General Office (PGR, for its acronym in Spanish) shared the positive development the adversarial judicial system has achieved with oral trials, as an agile and transparent procedure which facilitates the balance between the accused and the victim, as well as it ensures respect for their human rights.
On the 8th February the Mexican Attorney General exchanged points of view with Rt Hon Baroness Anelay of St Johns DBE, Minister of State at the FCO and Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, and also with Michael Gove, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, with whom she agreed to keep enhancing the cooperation process and exchange of information.
She recalled that the implementation of oral trials had been supported for almost a decade both by NGOs and by some governments, most notably the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
General Attorney Gomez-Gonzalez was also received in the House of Lords by Baroness Jane Bonham-Carter of Yarnbury, Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Mexico, and Baroness Hooper, President of the Anglo-LatinAmerican Foundation and vice president of the Friendship Group for Latin America.
Meanwhile, the FCO Minister of State for Latin America, Hugo Swire, invited her to share some remarks in a reception at the iconic home of the British Foreign Ministry, attended by undergraduates benefited by the Chevening scholarship programme, which granted 101 scholarships this year to the same number of outstanding young Mexican nationals to study in the best British universities.
On 9th February the General Attorney spoke with Karen Bradley, Minister for Preventing Abuse and Exploitation, the next following day she visited the Woolwich Crown Court.
