HRH PRINCE OF WALES CONCLUDES VISIT TO MEXICO

  • During his visit it was officially announced the Year of Mexico in the United Kingdom and the Year of the United Kingdom in Mexico in 2015.

 

MEXICO., 6th november 2014.- HRH The Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, concluded a visit to Mexico, where the Dual Year was officially announced as a mechanism to strengthen ties between the two nations and promote bilateral relations.

 

Attending the invitation of President Enrique Peña Nieto, Their Royal Highnesses began their three-day visit to Mexico on Sunday 2th November, they visited the town of Real del Monte, Hidalgo, considered the birthplace of the historical relationship between Mexico and the UK, which began with the Cornish miners from Falmouth who arrived in 1825 to help rescue the mining industry Mexican silver. In addition to the technologies of the industry of mining the miners brought pasties and football from Cornwall. Real del Monte it is twinned with Redruth in Cornwall with which.still maintains a thriving relationship.

 

As part of the commemoration of the Day of the Dead festivity in which people gather to pray and remember their deceased loved ones, visiting cemeteries, Their Royal Highnesses visited the Cornish cemetery in Real del Monte, where it is located the tombstone of a British soldier who fought in World War I, who migrated from Cornwall and died during the Battle of the Somme. The Prince, who is also Duke of Cornwall, and his wife, the Duchess, placed a wreath at the monument.

 

Their Royal Highnesses also visited Mexico City, Monterrey and Campeche. In the capital Their Royal Highnesses were officially received at National Palace by President Enrique Peña Nieto and the First Lady, Angelica Rivera, where it was officially announced the Year of the UK in Mexico and the Year of Mexico in the UK in 2015 - a programme designed to promote cooperation in the matters of education, science, innovation, culture and business. Later they attended a reception in their honor at the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso.

 

In Campeche, Their Royal Highnesses visited the archeological Maya site Edzná, dating back to 400 BC. During the tour they received a detailed explanation of the restoration project and met some of the workers involved in the programme.

 

On the last day of their visit to Mexico, The Prince and the Duchess visited Monterrey, considered as the business and industrial center in northern Mexico. In the state capital of Nuevo Leon, Their Royal Highnesses were received by Governor Rodrigo Medina before they started a programme of events in which they highlighted the regeneration of the historic sites of the industrial city of Monterrey. There, Prince Charles, first in line of succession to the British throne met with representatives of some of the top companies in Mexico and government institutions to support their role in the development of youth entrepreneurship and innovation.

 

It is important to note that HRH the Prince of Wales has visited Mexico previously on four occasions (1966, 1970, 1993, 2002), while the Duchess of Cornwall has visited the country privately.
