Mexican visa requirements for non-remunerated activities
Thank you for your interest in visiting Mexico. In order to apply for a tourist visa, kindly request an appointment through the free online appointment scheduling system of the Government of Mexico. You can reach it through the following web address:
There, you will need to set up an account and choose the most suitable time for your appointment at the Consular Section of the Embassy (it’s recommended that you use the web browser Google Chrome when booking your appointment). Once you have booked your appointment, the system will generate a confirmation letter, which you must bring with you to the Embassy on the day of your appointment. Said letter will also be emailed to the email account you provided.
We strongly recommend that you request an appointment with plenty of time in advance in order to avoid any inconveniences. Please take note that, if you wish to reschedule for a more convenient date or time, or if you miss your appointment, you will need to request a new appointment and have to follow the same procedure. Kindly note that the number of appointments is limited, so in case the system does not show our office or it does not issue a confirmation, it means that the Embassy is fully booked. Once your appointment has been confirmed, you will need to fulfill the following requirements. Please note that all documents are subject to verification and must be presented in both original and copy:
- Visa applications at the Embassy of Mexico have a non-refundable naira equivalent charge of $53.00 USD that must be deposited directly to the Embassy’s Account.
- Submit in person the printed visa application form dully filled and signed, since your biometric information (picture and fingerprints) is required. It is not possible to present your documents via courier or a third party.
- Present a valid passport, with at least 6 months left before its expiration date. If you are not a Nigerian citizen, you will also need to provide either evidence of your legal entry into Nigeria, or of your legal residence in the country.
- Bring with you one (1) passport sized color picture, with the following characteristics: front face, fully uncovered head, without glasses, and a white background.
- Provide evidence of adequate economic solvency by presenting any of the following documents:
- Documents accounting for an employment or pension allowance with a monthly income equivalent to minimum $1,473.80 USD, free of taxes, during the last 3 months, as well as proof of stable employment during the last year, or
- Investment documents or bank account statements in the name of the applicant with a minimum monthly average balance equivalent to $4,421.50 USD during the last 3 months, or
- Real estate property deed registered in the name of the applicant with at least 2 years (minimum) ownership and proof of stable employment for the last 2 years.
- Take part in a consular interview.
Usually, if the abovementioned requirements are fulfilled and no force majeure impediment arises, in particular the availability of the internet service, the visa is issued the same day it’s requested. Minors
Children under 18 years of age must submit their birth certificate and must be accompanied by either both parents or their legal guardians, or present a notarized authorization from them to travel to Mexico, including copy of the identifications of both parents (applies also for minors travelling alone). When travelling with single parents, widows or divorcees, the corresponding documents should be presented.
Invitation letters
Applicants who are being invited by a public or private institution in order to participate in an institutional event in Mexico will have to submit, along with their visa application form, passport and passport-sized picture, an original letter in the institution’s letterhead with the following information:
- Applicant's full name and nationality.
- Name of the organization.
- Official registration number, if applicable.
- Objective/purpose of the institution.
- Full address and contact details of the organization or institution.
- Information about the activity or project in which the applicant will be involved. Said activity must be related to the objectives of the organization or institution.
- Estimated duration or approximate date of completion of the activity.
- The guarantee to take care of all the applicant’s expenses during the visit to Mexico and to the return him/her to the country of origin or residence. In order to prove that they have the resources to comply with this, private institutions must present investment documents or bank account statements with a minimum average monthly balance equivalent to $14,738.30 USD during each of the last 12 months (12 monthly statements).
- Copy of an official identification with photograph and signature of the person signing the letter of invitation.
- The documents which prove that the applicant has the experience, capacity, skills or knowledge necessary to carry out the activity for which he has been invited, in original and copy. In addition to this, the letter of invitation must be accompanied by the signer’s signed ID.

Working permits
Visa applications for working permits have to be requested in Mexico by the prospective employer at any office of the National Migration Institute (Instituto Nacional de Migración – INM) located along the country. Once the authorization has been issued, the prospective employee must come in person to the Embassy with a copy of such authorization in order to take part in a consular interview.
Religious activities
Visa applicants who wish to travel to Mexico to participate in any religious activity must present in their visa application the document called anuencia, which is issued by the Ministry of the Interior in Mexico (Secretaría de Gobernación). Important notes:
- All visa applications are personal and therefore every applicant must request an appointment and apply by himself/herself -without any kind of intermediaries.
- Mexican Embassies and Consulates are the only authorities that can issue visas to travel to Mexico. Thus, the Embassy of Mexico does not authorize any external third party or intermediary during the visa process.
- There are neither urgent appointment nor urgent visas, please apply at your earliest convenience.
- Showing up for the consular interview does not guarantee that a visa will be issued, since that depends on the compliance of all requirements. Since no assurance regarding the issuance of visas can be given in advance, final travel plans or the purchase of non-refundable air tickets should not be made until you have the visa.
- All documents may be subject to verification. If you provide us with fraudulent documents or claims, this will result in processing delays and your application being refused. In addition, you will be placed in the immigration control list and will not be able to obtain a visa to enter Mexico.
- If you are granted a Mexican Visa you will be able to travel to Mexico. However, it does not guarantee entry to the country. At the point of entry, Mexican immigration authorities may ask you questions to confirm the reasons of your visit and request printed documents.
- Mexican Migration Law imposes severe restrictions on children under 18 years old traveling alone or in the company of adults other than their parents. The application form must be signed by both parents. Legal proof of relationship (i.e. birth certificate) must be provided, dully legalized and translated to Spanish if it’s in a language other than English.
Please bear in mind the following information when preparing your supporting documents:
- The Embassy may request further documents after your consular interview if needed to complete your application.
- In all your supporting documents, your name must exactly appear as it is written in your passport.
- Official documents issued in countries other than Nigeria must be legalized.
- Colour photocopies will not be accepted as substitutes of original documents.
- Documents submitted with your application will not be returned.
- Personal invitation letters are not accepted.

Exemptions
Applicants with a valid multiple entry visa for the United States of America, of any type, can enter Mexico without the need of a Mexican visa, as well as those holding a visa issued by Canada, Japan, United Kingdom and the Schengen States.
