The Government of the Republic submitted the fifth and final Progress Report 2015 on the Millennium Development Goals.

In this Report, Mexico reported a positive performance: the goals established were achieved in 37 of 51 indicators, equivalent to 72.5% compliance; six more will be completed in a short time and in the remaining seven will be strengthened to meet them in full.

Mexico must change. A message from the President of Mexico

After Iguala, Mexico must change. Therefore, like any other Mexican, I join citizens’ clamour for justice.

As a parent, I share the pain, anguish and uncertainty of the victims’ families.

As a Mexican citizen, I also share the demand for justice for society as a whole. These acts of barbarism cannot go unpunished.

And as president, I assume the responsibility of leading all efforts to free Mexico of crime; and to combat corruption and impunity. In short, to construct a rule of law.

Convinced of this, I have decided to promote fundamental changes that will enhance security, justice and the rule of law in Mexico. In view of the circumstances we have experienced, let us demonstrate, once again, Mexicans’ unity, character and determination.

Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade Speaks at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict

The summit brought together over a thousand people including foreign ministers, international organizations, civil society and legal and security experts, who reaffirmed the international condemnation of sexual violence in armed conflict and the need for a global strategy to prevent, investigate and punish this crime.

As regional sponsor of Britain's Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI), Foreign Secretary Meade spoke at the opening of the summit, saying it was unacceptable that, in the 21st century, sexual violence was still used as a tactic of war. He said the victims of this crime call on the international community to pay urgent attention to this crime and described as inexcusable the fact that most of the cases go unpunished despite being serious violations of human rights and of international humanitarian law.

At the Global Summit, the Foreign Secretary presented the recommendations of the international seminar "Time to Act: Voices from Latin America: Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict" which was held by the Foreign Ministry in Mexico City from May 12-13, 2014. The recommendations include the need for an intercultural perspective to combat sexual violence, the importance of providing training to the personnel that assist the victims, implementation of specific protective measures for victims and witnesses and creating stronger networks between governments and civil society.

Foreign Secretary Meade also participated in the ministerial roundtable on "Call to Action: Prevention of and Response to Sexual Violence in Emergency Situations," where he announced Mexico's support for the communiqué on protecting women and girls in emergency situations. This international effort brings together countries such as Australia, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as various UN agencies, international organizations and civil society to oprotect women who are the victims of these abuses.

In his speech at this roundtable, the Foreign Secretary said that Mexico would strengthen its collaboration with strategic actors such as the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in order to help improve the conditions of children in situations of armed conflict.

He was also invited to co-chair, with Norwegian Foreign Minister Børge Brende, a meeting for ministers on why it is important to involve women as active participants in the battle to stop sexual violence, the goal of which was to reflect on the key role of women in preventing conflicts, peacemaking, the rule of law and democracy building. During the meeting, Mexico stressed the importance of strengthening national and international mechanisms for the effective inclusion of women in these processes and the need to strengthen international cooperation for capacity building, including the exchange of best practices. The Foreign Secretary noted that Mexico has promoted strengthening the rule of law as a central principle for consolidating peace and promoting development.

Mexico was acknowledged during the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict as a strategic ally in this international effort due to its commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women, human rights and international peace and security.

As a regional sponsor of the initiative, Foreign Secretary Meade said that Mexico will continue working with all of the stakeholders involved in the cause. He asked the international community to complement the multilateral efforts of the UN to combat this crime with the results of the summit and, above all, to provide victims and their families with the justice they so desire.
