General Information about Mexican Visa applications
Thank you for your interest in visiting Mexico. Please read the following information carefully before applying for your appointment.
Important notes:
- Application submission
- Visa applications must be submitted by the applicant only.
- Passport requirements
- All travelers must present a valid passport or travel document when entering Mexico (by air, land, or sea).
- Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your trip. Check with your airline for any additional passport validity rules.
- Visa exemptions
- If you hold a valid multiple-entry visa from Canada, the USA, Japan, the UK, or any Schengen Area country, you do not need a visa to enter Mexico for tourism, business, or transit (for up to 180 days). Both your visa and passport must be valid during your stay.
- Permanent residents of Canada, the USA, Japan, the UK, any Schengen Area country, Chile, Colombia or Peru do not need a visa either. You must present a valid Resident Card and passport.
- US travel document holders must present a US valid Permanent Resident when entering Mexico if they are nationals of the countries listed in the following link: http://www.inm.gob.mx/gobmx/word/index.php/paises-requieren-visa-para-mexico/
- If you are traveling to Mexican ports on a cruise, you do not need a visa but must carry a valid passport.
- Theses exemptions do not guarantee admission to Mexican territory. Admission to Mexico is conditioned on approval of the immigration authority at the port of entry. How to apply
- Appointment request:
- All appointments must be booked ONLY through this website: https://citas.sre.gob.mx
- Appointments are free of charge.
- The Embassy does not work with agencies nor third parties for booking appointments for the applicants.
- Apply early; no express services are available.
- Once you booked your appointment, this Consular Section cannot change it, cancel it, reschedule it, or modify it in any way.

- Interview:
- On the date of the appointment, you will need to present ALL THE REQUIREMENTS depending on the type of visa you are applying for.
- Bring all your supporting documents (originals and photocopies). Please ensure all documents are staple free and bring your own pen.
- Before the interview your biometrics (picture and fingerprints) will be taken.
- Interviews are conducted in Nairobi, Kenya, at the premises of the Embassy.
- Only people with confirmed appointments will be allowed into the Embassy.
- We kindly suggest the use of facemask while at the Embassy’s premises.
- Kindly note the you will not be allowed to enter the Embassy’s premises with cellphone, tablet or any electronic device.
- After the Interview
- The Embassy will process your application within ten working days. Should we need additional time to study the application, we will let you know.
- An appointment does not guarantee visa approval.
- A granted visa allows you to travel to Mexico but does not guarantee entry. Admission to Mexico is conditioned on approval of the immigration authority at the port of entry. - Photo:
- One recent color passport-sized photo (white background, no glasses). Size should be between 3.2 cm x 2.6 cm and 3.9 cm x 3.1 cm.
- Proof of legal entry:
- If you are not Kenyan, provide the original and a copy of your document showing legal entry into Kenya. This will be required during your interview.
- Pay visa fee:
- The fee is for processing your application and is non-refundable, even if your visa is denied.
- Visa application fee is $ 53.00 USD –exact amount in USD cash–, to be paid on the date of your appointment.

- Financial proof:
- You must demonstrate economic solvency by providing one of the following:
- Personal certified bank statements showing with a monthly average balance equivalent to three hundred days of the current minimum wage of Mexico City (approximately $ 3,220.00 USD after taxes) for each of the last 3 months. Or
- Original and copy of documents showing stable employment for at least one year and proof of a net monthly income greater than the equivalent of 100 days of the current minimum wage in Mexico City (approximately $1,500 USD after taxes) for the last three months:
- Certified pay stubs for the last three months.
- Personal certified bank statements showing direct salary deposits for the last three months.
- A work letter on official letterhead, signed by your employer, stating your full name, position, net salary, start date, and contact details.
- If you are invited by a public or private entity:
- An original, hand-signed letter from the organization on letterhead, including:
- Your full name and nationality.
- Organization's full name and purpose, along with registration details.
- Address and contact information of the organization.
- Specific activity to participate in and time length.
- Information about the activity to be carried out or the project in which the foreign person will participate. The activity of the foreign person must be related to the purposes of the organization or institution that invites.
- Clear statement about taking care of all of the expenditures for the applicant during their stay in Mexico and to commit to the applicant’s return home.
- Contact details of the signatory as well as their full name.
- PRINTED COPIES FROM AN ORIGINAL LETTER SENT TO THE APPLICANT BY EMAIL OR LETTERS DIGITALLY SIGNED ARE NOT VALID.
- Copy of the ID of the person who signs the letter.
- Proof of the organization’s financial solvency: Certified bank statements showing a balance of approximately $15,000 USD for the last twelve months. Mexican public institutions, as well as academic institutions that are part of the National Education System of Mexico, are not required to prove solvency.
- Documentation proving the applicant’s relevant experience or skills for the activity in Mexico.
- An original, hand-signed letter from the organization on letterhead, including:

- Sponsorship:
Adult applicants cannot be sponsored by third parties, other than their spouses. If the case, original marriage certificate is required. - Document legalization:
- Birth and marriage certificates from countries other than Kenya must be legalized or apostilled.
- Translations:
- Documents in languages other than English or Spanish must include an official translation to Spanish.
- Minor applicants:
- If the applicant is a minor both parents should be present to sign the application. If only one parent is present, it is mandatory to submit a notarized and legalized authorization (Spanish or English) from the other parent stating that they authorize the application for a Mexican visa. The document must be legalized or apostilled. If a minor is attending with someone other than their parents, the same applies.
- In the case of children or adolescents whose parental authority only corresponds to one of the parents by judicial sentence, a legalized or apostilled copy of the official document that determines it must be presented. Notarized affidavits by only one of the parents are not accepted.
- If sponsored by parents, an original legalized or apostilled birth certificate is required.
- Age exemption:
- Travelers aged 65 or older do not need to provide proof of economic solvency for tourism activities. They need to present the documents with the details of their travel.
*This type of visa is only to study in institutions that belong to Mexico’s National Educational System to carry out courses, studies or research projects or academic or professional training for a period of less than 180 days

- Applicant’s full name.
- Level of Study/Degree.
- Field/program of study.
- Name of the program/Course.
- Length of the program (beginning and completion dates).
- Tuition fee (total fees required, including tuition and homestay if applicable).
- Contact details of the Institution (name of the institution, institution’s mailing address, telephone, e-mail, website, and name of contact).
- Copy of the ID of the person who sings said letter.
- PRINTED COPIES FROM AN ORIGINAL LETTER SENT TO THE APPLICANT BY EMAIL OR LETTERS DIGITALLY SIGNED ARE NOT VALID.
- Original ink signed acceptance letter issued on official letterhead from the School/Institution/University, which must include:
- Financial proof:
- You must present the documents that prove the economic solvency in any of the following assumptions:
- Personal certified bank statements showing with a monthly average balance equivalent to three hundred days of the current minimum wage of Mexico City (approximately $ 2,700.00 USD after taxes) for each of the last 3 months. Or
- Original and copy of documents showing stable employment for at least one year and proof of a net monthly income greater than the equivalent of 100 days of the current minimum wage in Mexico City (approximately $1,500 USD after taxes) for the last three months:
- Certified pay stubs for the last three months.
- Personal certified bank statements showing direct salary deposits.
- A work letter on official letterhead, signed by your employer, stating your full name, position, net salary, start date, and contact details.
- Sponsorship by parents or legal guardians. This option is only for applicants under 25 years old that are still studying:
- Birth certificate (legalized or apostilled) or of the document that states the legal guardianship (legalized or apostilled).
- Original letter from parents or legal guardian stating that they will be financing the applicant’s studies (affidavit of support).
- Copy of the official ID of the parent.
- Certified bank statements showing with a monthly average balance equivalent to three hundred days of the current minimum wage of Mexico City (approximately $ 3,220.00 USD after taxes) for each of the last 3 months.
- Certificate from the school stating that the applicant is enrolled at the institution (full name, grade, full name of the course, etc.).
- Letter from the educational institution that certifies that the applicant has been a beneficiary of a scholarship, or document from a banking or financial institution that certifies that they have full financing.
Remember that you need to present the original documents as well as a copy of each one.

- Original and copy of documents showing that the applicant has a job or pension that yields a monthly income of no less than $ 74,679.00 Mexican pesos or its equivalent in local currency, during the past 6 months:
- Certified bank statements that show the direct deposit of your salary/pension of the last 6 months.
- Certified paystubs of direct deposit of your salary/pension of the last 6 months.
- If the case, work letter on official letterhead, signed by your employer, stating your full name, position, net salary, start date, and contact details.
- If the case, letter on official letterhead stating that you receive a pension.
- You must present the documents that prove the economic solvency in any of the following assumptions:

- Original hand-signed letter of a religious institution on official letterhead paper appointing the applicant to a posting in Mexico, containing:
- Name and nationality of applicant.
- Name and purpose of the organization, and registration information.
- Address and contact information for the organization.
- Specific activity to participate in and duration or approximate date of completion.
- Clear statement about taking care of all of the expenditures of the foreigner during his or her stay in Mexico.
- Copy of the official identification of the person who signs the letter.
- PRINTED COPIES FROM AN ORIGINAL LETTER SENT TO THE APPLICANT BY EMAIL OR LETTERS DIGITALLY SIGNED ARE NOT VALID.
- Original hand-signed letter of a religious institution on official letterhead paper appointing the applicant to a posting in Mexico, containing:
- Financial proof
- The religious organization must prove economic solvency in order to engage in the commitment referred above by submitting proof of investment or certified bank statements with a monthly average balance of approximately $ 150,000.00 USD, or its equivalent in other currency, for the last twelve months. OR
- This requirement will be exempted if the inviting institution in Mexico obtains a clearance document (“ANUENCIA”) by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Secretaría de Gobernación) for the invited Missionary or Minister of Worship.
- Provide documentation proving you have the experience, ability, skills or knowledge necessary to undertake the activity you have been invited to do.

- Document that shows the familial relationship with the holder of the temporary/permanent resident card of Mexico. If the resident in Mexico is the applicant’s…
- Spouse: original marriage certificate (legalized or apostilled).
- Parent: original birth certificate of the applicant (legalized or apostilled). The visa will only be granted if the applicant is under 18 years of age and he/she has not contracted marriage or is in a state of interdiction and is under his/her legal guardianship.
- Child: original birth certificate (of the child who has the temporary/permanent resident card of Mexico). The certificate has to be legalized or apostilled.
- Original and copy of the valid temporary/permanent resident card of Mexico (the applicant’s family member who is the holder of the temporary/permanent resident card of Mexico must be present at time of application).
- Proof of economic solvency (only applies if the applicant’s family member is a holder of a temporary/permanent resident card of Mexico):
- Original and copy of proof of certified personal investment accounts or certified personal bank accounts with a monthly balance of at least $ 1,500.00 USD during the past 12 months (provide the last 12 months of certified bank statements). OR
- Original and copy of documents showing that the applicant has a job or pension that yields a monthly income of no less than $ 1,500.00 USD after taxes during the previous 6 months:
- Certified pay stubs for the last six months.
- Personal certified bank statements showing direct salary deposits for the last six months.
- A work letter on official letterhead, signed by your employer, stating your full name, position, net salary, start date, and contact details.
AFTER ENTERING MEXICO WITH THIS TYPE OF VISA, YOU MUST GO TO THE NEAREST “INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE MIGRACIÓN” (INM) OFFICE TO GET YOUR RESIDENT ID.

- Documents in languages other than English or Spanish must include an official translation to Spanish.
- Minor applicants:
- If the applicant is a minor both parents should be present to sign the application. If only one parent is present, it is mandatory to submit a notarized and legalized authorization (Spanish or English) from the other parent stating that they authorize the application for a Mexican visa. The document must be legalized or apostilled. If a minor is attending with someone other than their parents, the same applies.
- In the case of children or adolescents whose parental authority only corresponds to one of the parents by judicial sentence, a legalized or apostilled copy of the official document that determines it must be presented. Notarized affidavits by only one of the parents are not accepted.
- If sponsored by parents, an original legalized or apostilled birth certificate is required.

- Complete and sign the application form.
- Passport:
- Provide your valid passport and a copy of the main page. Your passport must have at least two blank pages for visa stamping.
- Photo:
- One recent color passport-sized photo (white background, no glasses). Size should be between 3.2 cm x 2.6 cm and 3.9 cm x 3.1 cm.
- Proof of legal entry:
- If you are not Kenyan, provide the original and a copy of your document showing legal entry into Kenya. This will be required during your interview.
- Pay visa fee:
- The fee is for processing your application and is non-refundable, even if your visa is denied.
- Visa application fee is $ 53.00 USD –exact amount in USD cash–, to be paid on the date of your appointment.
- We cannot accept mutilated or torn bills. They should be is as mint condition as possible.
- Bills issued before 2009 are not accepted.
- Copy of the approval letter issued by the “Instituto Nacional de Migracion (INM)” where the “Número Único de Trámite (NUT)” is indicated.
- If the NUT was issued by a work offer, the applicant must submit the documentation proving the experience, skills or knowledge necessary to undertake the activity that he or she has been invited to participate in.
AFTER ENTERING MEXICO WITH THIS TYPE OF VISA, YOU MUST GO TO THE NEAREST “INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE MIGRACIÓN” (INM) OFFICE TO GET YOUR RESIDENT ID.
