The maximum period of stay as a tourist is 180 days, during which the passport must remain valid.  The decision to admit you for a shorter period or to deny you admission for not having a passport with a minimum validity of 6 months is exclusively up to the immigration personnel who interview you at the port of entry.  Therefore, our recommendation is that you travel to Mexico with a passport valid for more than 6 months.

Before your trip, the first thing to check is whether you need a visa for the purpose of your trip and stay in Mexico. For this purpose, we recommend that you consult the following link:

Please note that, according to the regulations, the immigration authority has the power to authorise the entry and exit of foreigners from Mexico.

Documents to be presented at the point of entry into Mexico
A foreigner who wishes to enter in Mexico as a visitor without a permit to carry out remunerated activities must satisfy the following requirements:
1. Present a valid passport. It is not required to have a specific period of validity, but the passport must be valid for the period of stay and on the date of departure from Mexico.
2. If entering via area, it will no longer be necessary to complete the Multiple Migration Form electronically (FMMe), nor the Multiple Migration Form in the traditional way. The NMI, through the update of its migration services, offers all foreigners who enter in Mexico through the area, the possibility of downloading the Digital Multiple Migration Form, as a way to facilitate and accelerate the migration procedures of foreigners in the country. 3. Present the airline ticket to exit from Mexico.
4. Justify the trip, using one of the following documents:

  • Hotel reservation, round-trip tickets (itinerary), tour tickets (itinerary).
  • Mandatory letter in Spanish from the head company, subsidiary or foreign affiliate indicating that the foreign person is an employee of the company and that payment for the services to be provided in the national territory will be paid by the company.
  • Contract for the transfer of technology, patents and trademarks, purchase and sale of machinery and equipment, technical training of personnel, or any other contract related to the production process of a company established in Mexico or linking the foreign party to the Mexican party, or certificate for the appointment by the shareholders' meeting of companies legally established in Mexico (copy).
  • Letter from a public or private organisation or institution inviting the foreign person to participate in an unpaid activity in Mexican territory, indicating the purpose of the visit and the expected duration of the stay. In the event that the organisation or institution assumes the cost of the foreigner's travel and stay in the national territory, a letter of responsibility must be attached.
  • Letter of invitation or acceptance from an institution belonging to the National Education System to carry out courses, studies or research or training projects for a maximum period of 180 days (original).

5. In case, provide the immigration authority with any other information requested.

Note: If you are a foreigner who requires a visa to enter in Mexico, you must present it together with the documentation required by the Mexican immigration authorities at the point of entry into the country.

Vaccinations
Current regulations do not require foreigners to carry any vaccinations.

Airport taxes
Check in advance with your airline if you need to pay airport taxes on entry and/or departure.

According to the SAT website, it is necessary to declare any amounts in cash, in collectable documents or a combination of both that combined exceed 10,000.00 (ten thousand US dollars) or their equivalent in national currency or other currencies.
