PRESS RELEASE OF THE EMBASSY OF MEXICO IN HUNGARY RELATED TO THE EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 7.1 DEGREES ON THE RICHTER SCALE, WITH EPICENTER AT THE BORDERS OF MORELOS AND PUEBLA, 120 KILOMETERS AWAY FROM MEXICO CITY.

September 20th, 2017, Budapest - The Embassy of Mexico in Budapest, Hungary informs about the earthquake that hit the center of the country yesterday, September 19th:

The earthquake happened at 1:14 pm, local time, had an intensity of 7.1 degrees on the Richter scale, the epicenter was located 120 kilometers away from the country's capital. In the subsequent hours there have been several aftershocks of the quake with less intensity. The data of victims are changing and so far the federal Civil Protection authority has reported 217 mortal victims.

The earthquake affected especially the center of the country, particularly the states of Mexico, Morelos, Puebla, Guerrero and Oaxaca, as well as Mexico City, and took place on the same date that the earthquake on September 1985 that damaged the same region thirty-two years ago.

The Government of Mexico assesses the damage and has concentrated its capabilities in the rescue of people in collapsed buildings, there are important outages in the electricity supply but most of the city operates under normal conditions.

The National Emergency Committee activated the MX Plan, which coordinates federal relief efforts in an emergency. Thousands of members of the Army, Navy and Federal Police have already attended the population. Civil society reacted immediately by providing assistance in rescuing and supporting relief teams.

The priority at this time is to continue the rescue of those still trapped and to provide medical care to the wounded. Public health services are available to anyone who requires care, whether or not entitled to them.

Airport services and the road network operate normally throughout the country.

The Mexican Red Cross made available the Family Link Restoration program to support people who have lost contact with relatives in Mexico City; they can do it through the following phone numbers: +52 (55) 1084 4517 and +52 (55) 1084 4795, or by going directly to the heliport of the Mexican Red Cross located in National Army N ° 1032, in Mexico City.
