FROM MAY 23 TO MAY 27, MEXICO WILL HOST THE XXXVI SESSION OF THE ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN (ECLAC)

During National Day, organized by the Mexican government to analyze the 2030 Agenda from the perspective of economic inclusion, in the framework of the thirty sixth Session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) – UN, the Foreign Secretary, Claudia Ruiz Massieu and Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the ECLAC, gave a press conference where they underlined the necessity to coordinate actions to strengthen the economic relations and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda of sustainable development in our region.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that a clear example of this approach is the National Day that has just ended and that is a new space designed for the inclusion and dialogue between government, civil society, academy and representatives of the international organizations.

The Foreign Secretary assured that for Mexico “this session of the ECLAC is especially important, since besides being the host country, Mexico chairs the presidency of the organization during the next two years. This way Mexico will seek to take advantage of the successful experiences and to ensure that every country will develop attending their own context a public way, with a clear roadmap of action.  

Ruiz Massieu said that she will seek to promote four strategic topics that are the approach of inclusion and the multidimensional attention to poverty, the recognition of migrants regardless of their status, like development actors, the equality and the transversal axis of women and children empowerment and the importance of Constitutional State and of the transparent and effective institutions to promote the inclusion and fight poverty.

For her part, the Executive Secretary of the ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena, informed that she will present the Horizon 2030 position paper: the equality in the center of sustainable development, what she referred to as “a proposal, a bet that the standard of dominant development is not sustainable, therefore we have to make profound changes in global and regional governance” and assured that it is necessary to “build coalitions between the state, the market and the society and to call for a worldwide collective action, to deal with the problems of the Biosphere, climate change and migration.”

During the thirty sixth session of the ECLAC that will take place in the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) from May 24^th to 27^th, 45 member states and 13 associated members of the regional organizations will participate.
