Comunicado sobre el sismo en territorio mexicano 7 de septiembre | Tiedote Meksikossa 7. syyskuuta sattuneesta maanjäristyksestä | Information about the Mexican earthquake on the 7th of September

Meksikon hallitus on syvästi kiitollinen näistä avuntarjouksista.

Information about the Mexican earthquake on the 7th of September.

The Embassy of Mexico informs that the earthquake which hit Mexico yesterday, registering 8.2 on the Richter scale, was the largest ever measured in the country. As is usual in these circumstances, there had been at least 205 aftershocks by 10AM (Mexican Central Time Zone corresponding to 18:00 hrs in Finland) on September 8th, and the number is increasing. The largest of these measured 6.1 on the Richter scale.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the state of Chiapas in Southern Mexico, and it was felt practically in half of the country. The capital of the country was not affected in a major way.

The number of deaths was at first reported as 32, but the number has been increasing and it is not yet possible to give an official figure.

The National Civil Protection System (Sistema Nacional de Protección Civil), which was created in the wake of the earthquake that hit our country in 1985, has implemented emergency measures, and collaboration has been initiated between all federal institutions, including the armed forces, the authorities responsible for the supply of energy and water, healthcare and social services authorities, the Mexican Red Cross, as well as private telephone and telecommunication companies. All these institutions form a part of and are coordinated by the National Committee for Emergencies (Comité Nacional de Emergencias), which is assembled and remains active until the resolution of the state of emergency. State and municipal authorities also participate in the emergency measures in the affected regions.

There were some problems with the electric supply; however in almost all cases they have been resolved.

However, in the states most affected by the earthquake (Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tabasco), federal and state authorities continue to rescue and assist the victims.

The National Committee for Emergencies has estimated that currently Mexico is in capacity to deal with the emergency and it is not necessary to resort to international aid, which has generously been offered by numerous countries and international organizations. The Government of Mexico expresses its deepest gratitude for this support.
