The Embassy of Mexico informs that the Ministry of Public Security of Mexico (SSP) announced yesterday evening that in coordination with the state of Sonora ’s police force, Federal agents apprehended Jesus Navarro Montes, for his alleged responsibility in the death of Border Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar on January 19th, 2008, in Yuma , Arizona . Mr. Navarro was also being sought on additional charges related to violations of Mexico ’s immigration law.
Preliminary investigations determined that on January 19th, Mr. Navarro left the city of Mexicali , Baja California and headed for the U.S. driving a Hummer vehicle, presumably carrying drugs. As Border Patrol agents tried to stop it, Agent Aguilar was run down and Mr. Navarro fled the scene back to Mexican territory.
Mexican federal and state agents took immediate actions to locate and detain the individuals responsible for this crime.
On January 22nd, Mr. Navarro was apprehended in the town of “El Yaqui”, in Sonora , as a result of a warrant issued for his arrest by a District Judge in Mexicali , Baja California , for his outstanding charges.
Mr. Navarro had been previously detained and imprisoned for migrant smuggling to the United States .
With these actions, and in accordance with Mexico ’s Comprehensive Strategy to Prevent Crime and Combat Delinquency, the Mexican government reaffirms its unwavering commitment and determination to uphold the rule of law in Mexico.
