Good morning ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to the Embassy of Mexico.
I want to thank you all for being here today. Especially, I would like to acknowledge the presence of the members of the Local Selection Committee, and the representatives and students of the IME-Becas recipient organizations.
Thank you all for supporting the education of Mexican immigrants in the United States.
As you know, education is one of the most important paths to empower the immigrant community. The IME-Becas program was created in 2005 as an initiative to increase educational opportunities for low-income Mexican immigrants. IME-Becas is a clear example of the important collaboration between your institutions and the Government of Mexico. Our partnership allows more students to pursue adult literacy programs, computer skills, workforce training, and a college education.
This joint effort is one more step forward towards expanding opportunities for Mexican citizens to achieve a better quality of life, regardless of where they decide to live.
I am very pleased to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the program. During the last ten years, IME-Becas has invested over 10 million dollars to strengthen the educational skills and opportunities of over 56,000 Mexican students.
I am pleased to share with you that, as a continuation of IME-Becas’ mission for the academic year 2015-2016, the Local Selection Committee decided to grant the IME-Becas scholarship to the following organizations:
- Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School (Washington D.C.)
- Dream Project (Arlington, Virginia)
- The William and Lanaea Featherstone Foundation (Baltimore, Maryland)
- Sacred Heart Center (Richmond, Virginia)
- The Steward School (Richmond, Virginia)
The Government of Mexico will grant these organizations a total sum of 50 thousand dollars. I am certain that these funds will be put to good use in order to promote the well-being of the Mexican community in our region.
I would also like to recognize the outstanding commitment of the recipient organizations to contribute matching funds. That commitment is essential to multiply the number of IME-Becas recipients.
Finally, I would like to congratulate the recipient organizations and recognize their highly respected and valuable work.
Thank you all for your presence here today and for your ongoing support. We will now proceed with the symbolic delivery of the scholarships.
