Ladies and gentleman, representatives of the media, good afternoon to you all.

Thank you very much for being here in the National Palace this afternoon and for transmitting this message to the citizens of Mexico.

This morning, in the municipality of Los Mochis, in Sinaloa, members of the security institutions of the Mexican government captured Joaquin Guzman Loera. Finding his location, following and recapturing him are the result of the joint work of the intelligence, security, and law enforcement agencies of the Mexican State.

This action is an achievement for the rule of law, an achievement that is the result of coordination between our armed forces, the Mexican Army, Navy, the Federal Police, and the Center for Investigation and National Security. This action against impunity is a result of the constant work of valuable members of these institutions who day and night dedicated themselves to accomplishing the mission I ordered—to recapture this criminal and bring him to justice. I express my institutional and personal recognition and to each and every one of them. I express to them the recognition of all Mexico. They are a symbol of pride for our nation.

This arrest, as I pledged, had to happen. For months, intense and careful intelligence work and criminal investigation was conducted, which allowed us to identify, arrest, and take apart the network of influence and protection of this criminal.

Today, Mexico confirms that its institutions have the necessary capabilities to confront and overcome whoever threatens the tranquility of Mexican families. This arrest shows that when Mexicans work together there is no adversity that is impossible for us to overcome, that any goal can be reached if we trust in the solidity and strength of our institutions.

With this operation, 98 of the 122 most wanted criminals in the country no longer pose a threat to Mexican society, criminals who for years have done damage to the country.  We will continue to confront organized crime through our systems of intelligence, coordination, firmness and effectiveness. We will continue to do so to comply with our duty, and because we have the backing of millions of Mexicans who seek to live in a country of laws and freedoms.

That is why today's arrest is very important for our security institutions of the Mexican government. Today, our institutions have shown once more that citizens can trust in them, that our institutions are up to the task, that they have the strength and determination to accomplish any mission given to them. To face our nation’s biggest challenges, Mexicans have a national government decided and determined to build a better country.

Today, once again, we have proved that there is no greater force than the force of Mexicans working together. Once more, from here in the National Palace, I reiterate my highest congratulations and recognition to all of the personnel in all of the institutions of security in our country who participated in the recapture of this criminal for whom we had been searching.

Thank you very much and to all of the heads of the institutions who are present here, I would like to ask them to pass along my congratulations and recognition to all of those who participated in this operation. Mexico is very proud of them.

Thank you very much, and good afternoon.
