Press release no. 006

Mogadishu, Somalia, August 05, 2025.

  • Mexican Ambassador conducts official visit and presents letters of credence in Mogadishu.
  • This marks the first time a Mexican representative is formally accredited before Somali authorities.

During a two-day working visit, the Ambassador of Mexico, Alejandro Estivill Castro, carried out official activities in Mogadishu as part of his formal accreditation as the Government of Mexico’s representative to the Federal Republic of Somalia.

On the first day of his agenda, the Ambassador held a courtesy meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, to whom he presented the style copies of his letters of credence. During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their willingness to strengthen bilateral dialogue, as well as their shared commitment to international cooperation in multilateral forums, particularly on issues related to peace, security, and sustainable development in Africa and globally. They agreed on the importance of promoting South-South collaboration considering current challenges.

That same day, a meeting was held with the State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ali Mohamed Omar, to define areas of cooperation that could be fostered between the two countries, primarily in agriculture, institutional development, electoral organization, and diaspora.

On the second day, Ambassador Estivill was received by the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, to whom he formally presented the letters of credence accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico to the Somali Government. President Mohamud warmly welcomed the appointment of a diplomatic representative by Mexico’s first woman President. He also expressed his interest in establishing closer communication with Mexico, based on more structured foundations regarding key issues on the multilateral agenda.

This act carries historical significance, as it marks the first occasion a Mexican ambassador has presented credentials in Somalia. The ceremony also coincided with a notable anniversary: the 50th year since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, on August 5, 1975.

"It is a great honor to represent Mexico in Somalia on such a meaningful date. This accreditation marks a milestone in our bilateral relationship and opens new opportunities to expand cooperation channels in areas of mutual interest, both regionally and globally," stated Ambassador Estivill Castro.

Mexico and Somalia have maintained a respectful and constructive relationship in various multilateral forums. This visit represents a renewed effort to deepen bilateral cooperation and explore new avenues of political, economic, and cultural understanding, based on the principles of friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect.
