Press release no. 005

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 04, 2025.

  • The Ambassador of Mexico held a high-level meeting with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, as part of efforts to strengthen political dialogue with Africa.

As a demonstration of Mexico’s commitment to the African continent and its multilateral leadership, Ambassador Alejandro Estivill Castro met with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahamoud Ali Youssouf. This meeting marked the first official engagement since Youssouf assumed leadership of the organization’s main executive body. Held in a cordial and open atmosphere, the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on major global challenges and to explore new channels of collaboration between Mexico and the African Union.

The discussion covered key issues on the shared agenda, including international governance, peace and security, cooperation in multilateral forums such as the G20, the promotion of human rights -including gender equality and the rights of people of African descent- as well as opportunities in trade, agriculture, artificial intelligence, and migration.

Chairperson Youssouf acknowledged Mexico’s experience across various areas and expressed interest in deepening political, technical, and cultural engagement with the country. Both sides agreed on the need to revitalize dialogue and exchange mechanisms in a global context that increasingly demands greater coordination among countries of the Global South.

“The future of international cooperation necessarily involves a closer and more strategic relationship between Africa and Latin America. Mexico is ready to build bridges that benefit our regions,” stated Ambassador Estivill following his meeting with the AUC Chairperson.

A key highlight of the meeting was the shared commitment to enrich the Mexico–African Union relationship. As 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Mexico’s establishment of permanent observer status to the AU, both parties expressed interest in organizing commemorative activities to showcase achievements and outline new areas for cooperation.

This initial engagement with the AUC’s new leadership marks a milestone in bilateral relations and reflects a shared interest in renewing and expanding avenues of cooperation between Mexico and Africa. In an increasingly interconnected world, the open and candid dialogue between both parties lays the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive, and representative common agenda for the Global South.
