Mexico celebrates the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Korea

Seoul.- To launch the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the Republic of Korea, the Ambassador of Mexico to Korea, Bruno Figueroa, laid a wreath before the bust of former President Yun Posun. During his mandate (1960-1962), Korea established diplomatic relations with Mexico on January 26, 1962.

Ambassador Figueroa underscored the vision of the Mexican and Korean governments in 1962, to expand their presence and friendly relations on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. He emphasized that, despite the geographical distance and cultural differences, Mexico and Korea have successfully built, in six decades, a solid relationship of cooperation and mutual trust, based on multiple and diverse shared interests, as well as on a deep affinity between both societies. In 2005, both governments established a Strategic Partnership for Mutual Prosperity to upgrade the bilateral relations, with successful results.

Currently, the bilateral trade exceeds 20 billion dollars per year, which places Korea as Mexico's fourth largest trading partner, and Mexico as the main market for Korea in Latin America. Mexico is a production hub for hundreds of South Korean manufacturing companies that have chosen our country as a destination for their investment and a gateway to the Americas. Thousands of jobs depend on the Mexico-Korea economic relation.

The intense political dialogue has expanded beyond the bilateral sphere, which is reflected in the formulation of common positions in multilateral fora, where Korea and Mexico promote joint initiatives. In 2013, alongside other middle powers such as Indonesia, Turkey and Australia, Mexico and Korea created MIKTA, a platform for multilateral cooperation.

During 2022, Mexico and the Republic of Korea will celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations with several activities, including an archeological exhibition and a Gala Concert at the Seoul Arts Center. Korea will be the guest country of honor at the Cervantino Festival, Mexico’s main cultural festival.
