The Ambassadors of Mexico and France join forces to promote the Gender Equality Forum

Friday, March 26, 2021 | Joint communiqué

Seoul, March 26.- A few days prior to its opening, the Ambassadors of Mexico, Bruno Figueroa, and France, Philippe Lefort, joined together to announce the celebration of the Generation Equality Forum aimed at raising awareness on the urgent contributions needed from the international community to fully achieve gender equality.

The Generation Equality Forum is a civil society centered, multistakeholder global gathering for gender equality, convened by UN Women and co-hosted by the Governments of Mexico and France, in partnership with civil society and youth. The Forum will launch in Mexico City, in a virtual format, from 29 to 31 March 2021, and will culminate in Paris from 30 June to 2 July 2021.

On behalf of the Mexican Government, Ambassador Figueroa stressed that the Forum in Mexico City will bring together feminist activists from across the globe to foster action and renew movements for gender equality, as well as to launch a set of innovative and multi-stakeholder Action Coalitions. He recounted that Mexico has traditionally advocated for gender equality, as illustrated by the hosting of the First Conference on the Advancement of Women in 1975 and by becoming the first Latin American nation to adopt a Feminist Foreign Policy in 2019.

On the side of France, Ambassador Philippe Lefort highlighted that the Forum Generation Equality event will be the most significant meeting for gender equality since the World Conference on Women held in 1995 in Beijing, China. He also explained that hosting this international event is, for France, an extraordinary opportunity to emphasize the importance of gender equality, which was declared a major national cause by President Emmanuel Macron, and to share feminist diplomacy around the world.

As part of the ongoing drive for increased cooperation between governments and civil society within the context of the global pandemic, the Ambassadors of Mexico and France welcomed the decision of the Republic of Korea to participate in the Generation Equality Forum as a “commitment maker country” within the Action on Coalition on Gender Violence. They also recognized that the experience of Korea on the formulation and implementation of policies to prevent gender violence will be beneficial for the Forum’s objectives.

The Generation Equality Forum is a unique opportunity to discuss how to effectively combat violence against women. All interested parties in attending the Forum of Mexico City are invited to sign up on https://forogeneracionigualdadmx.vfairs.com/ and find the official program at https://forogeneracionigualdad.mx/
