The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Patricia Espinosa, is visiting Canada today to hold working meetings with Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Baird. The encounter is in reciprocity for the meeting that took place in Mexico City in August 2011, shortly after the Canadian official assumed his current post.
The Foreign Ministers analyzed the central topics on the extensive bilateral agenda, including regional and global matters of shared interest. They reviewed progress in the implementation of the 2010-2012 Joint Action Plan agreed on by both countries, which identifies concrete steps to strengthen the political, economic and cooperation ties between the two nations.
Contacts between Mexico and Canada have continually deepened and expanded in recent years, bilaterally and in the context of North America. Each country ranks as the other’s third largest trading partner, and Canada is the fourth country of origin for foreign investment in Mexico. High-level political dialogue is intense, as is governmental contact at all levels. Each year over 1.5 million Canadian tourists visit Mexico.
Taking place in the context of this visit is the 8th meeting of the Canada-Mexico Partnership, the primary forum for dialogue and cooperation between the public and private sectors of the two countries.
During her stay in Ottawa, Secretary Espinosa will also participate in the presentation of the book “Canada Among Nations, 2011-2012”, an influential annual publication on international affairs, dedicated this year to the bilateral relationship. The presentation will be made to prominent business leaders, academics and opinion leaders.
