Permanent Resident Visa for pensioners or retirees

This visa allows permanent residency in Mexico without permission to engage in paid employment.

Who is it for?
Foreign nationals who receive a pension or retirement income from outside Mexico and who will use that income to live in Mexico.

Requirements

  1. Valid passport (original + simple copy).
  2. Visa application form:(PDF anexo)
  3. One recent passport-size photograph, colour, white background, no glasses (not older than 30 days).
  4. If you are not a Belgian national: Provide the original and a simple copy of the document proving legal stay in Belgium (visa or residence permit).
  5. To prove that you are a pensioner or retiree with sufficient financial resources, you must provide the following documentation:
-Original or digitally certified electronic document showing proof of investments or bank accounts with an average monthly balance equivalent to forty-five thousand eight hundred and fifty days days in UMA (approximately €256,127, depending on the exchange rate on the date of application), for the last twelve months, or
-Original documents proving you have a pension with a monthly income, free of taxes, exceeding the equivalent of one thousand one hundred and forty days in UMA (approximately €6,370 depending on the exchange rate on the date of application), for the last six months.

Application Procedure

  1. Prepare all required documents.
  2. Schedule an appointment through the official system: https://citas.sre.gob.mx Select the option: “VISAS”
  3. Attend the appointment in person with all documents and complete the consular interview.
Payment is made on the day of the appointment, preferably by transfer.
    For updated consular fees: https://embamex.sre.gob.mx/belgica/images/ServiciosConsulares/derechos_consulares2024

Four possible outcomes:

  1. The documentation is complete, the interview is satisfactory, and no additional verification is needed → the visa may be issued the same day.
  2. Additional documentation is required → you will be asked to complete it and come back with a new appointment within the next 10 business days.
  3. The documentation is complete, the interview is satisfactory, but an alarm appears in the security or migration control lists, which means that additional verification is needed → processing may take up to 10 business days.
  4. The applicant does not meet the requirements, or their consular interview is unsatisfactory → the visa is denied.

Important Considerations

  • Visa must be used within 180 days from issuance.
  • Once in Mexico, you must apply for the Permanent Resident Card at Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) within 30 days of your arrival.
  • The visa does not guarantee entry into Mexico; final admission is determined by immigration authorities at the port of entry.
  • For minors, both parents must sign the application or provide notarized consent.
  • Documents issued outside Belgium or Mexico must be apostilled or legalized and include a simple Spanish translation if necessary.
  • Airline tickets or travel reservations are not required and do not influence visa approval.
  • Issuance of the visa depends on the consular interview. Fees are non-refundable, even if the visa is denied.
