Temporary Resident Visa for Students
Applicable to foreigners who intend to enter Mexico as students for a period of more than 180 days and no more than 4 years.
Criteria for visa issuing:
- Each applicant is responsible for his/her own visa procedure. Therefore, before attending your appointment, you must personally read the information provided by this Consulate. We do not accept information or appointments from third parties.
- Minors must present their birth certificate and be accompanied by both parents or the legal guardian(s), each showing a valid passport. If one of the parents is deceased, a certified copy of the Mexican, Austrian, Slovenian, or Slovak death certificate must be submitted (the latter two, with a translation into Spanish or English). If the document was issued in another country, it must be apostilled or accordingly legalized and include an official translation into Spanish or English. Loss of custody does not imply total loss of parental authority, so proof of custody is NOT sufficient to apply for a minor's visa without the other parent's authorization.
Requirements
- All documents must be submitted in ORIGINAL with a handwritten signature and stamp of the document's issuer, or an official document with a digital signature verifiable at this Consulate. Simple copies or unverifiable digital formats are NOT recognized as valid documents under any circumstance.
- Documents issued by a country other than Mexico or the countries within consular competence (Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia) require an apostille or legalization by the Embassy of Mexico in the issuing country (as appropriate).
- Documents in a language other than Spanish, English or German must be submitted with an official translation into Spanish or English by a certified translator, without exceptions. Documents in Slovenian or Slovak language require only a simple translation.
- The decision on your visa application, whether it is approved or denied, may take up to 10 business days. You will be informed of the decision once your application has been received and reviewed.
- NOTE: In any case, the foreigner must apply for a residence card within 30 calendar days from entering Mexican territory to certify their legal stay and be allowed to remain in the country.
- Valid passport or identity/travel document that is valid under international law, in original
- Proof of legal residence, in original, if the applicant is not a citizen of the country where the visa is being requested
- Letter of acceptance (on official paper) from the institution at which the course, study, research project, academic or professional education will take place. The letter must contain the following information:
- Applicant's full name and nationality;
- Applicant's intended level, degree and area of study;
- Name of the course or academic activity to which he/she has been accepted;
- Start and end dates of the course or academic activity;
- Cost of tuition fees;
- Identification and official registry data of the academic institution
- Economic solvency (ONE option):
- Payroll or pension receipts showing a minimum monthly income of MXN$25,808.20 Mexican Pesos (in 2026, approx. €1.270,00 euros) during the past three months, OR
- Investment or bank account statements showing a minimum monthly balance of MXN$268,639.90 Mexican Pesos (in 2026, approx. €13.220,00 euros) during the past three months.
- NOTE: The economic solvency may be accredited by the applicant; by the parents (with birth certificate) in the case of minors; by the sole custodial parent or legal guardian (with corresponding court ruling); by the spouse (with marriage certificate) or spousal equivalent (with corresponding document of proof); or with a letter from the educational institution stating that the student has been awarded a scholarship.
Payment of fees:
The fees for visa application, procedure and, eventually, granting of the visa amount to USD$56.00 (2026). The amount is charged in Euros according to the monthly exchange rate and can be paid by card (Visa, MasterCard, Maestro). The consular fees can be consulted here.
How to schedule an appointment:
- Make sure that you have all the required documents and meet the above-mentioned criteria for visa issuing. If you do not have complete and correct documentation, your application will NOT be processed. We recommend that you schedule a new appointment once you have all the required documents.
- Go to the website “MiConsulado” citas.sre.gob.mx, preferably on a PC, and log into the appointment booking system though the option at the right “correo y contraseña”. Do NOT use the option LlaveMX, since it is only for residents of Mexico with a Mexican phone number and address.
- Each visa applicant must register only under the section “Visa” (including work and/or residence permits). Please fill out all fields so that the consulate may contact you if necessary.
- Delete temporal data (clear cache and cookies), allow pop-ups (calendar view)
- Use an email address with a popular domain (gmail.com; hotmail.com.mx; hotmail.com; outlook.es; icloud.com; yahoo.com.mx; live.com; live.com.mx; hotmail.es; sre.gob.mx; msn.com; live.com; prodigy.net.mx) and avoid corporate domains.
- If there was a system update or the session was blocked due to suspicious activity, change your password or, if necessary, it is advisable to create a new account.
- The appointment booking system shows available appointments for the current month first. After the 16th day of the month, it shows the appointments available for the next month. The opening hours for consular service are Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 12:00 hours (except holidays in Austria).
- You should book your appointment in advance of your trip to Mexico, no earlier than 5 months and no later than 3 weeks before your travel date.
Important: A visa does not guarantee entry into the country. It only grants the holder permission to travel to a port of entry and request permission to enter.
Entry or admission into Mexico depends on the approval of health and immigration authorities at the ports of entry, known as immigration checkpoints. These authorities may conduct an interview regarding the purpose of the visit and verify compliance with the applicable legal requirements (Article 37 of the Migration Law and Article 60 of its Regulations).
During your appointment:
- If you are unable to attend your appointment on time, you must request a reschedule.
- NO appointments will be attended beyond scheduled hours.
- Accompanying people are not allowed to enter the Embassy building.
- Please silence your cell phone and DO NOT use it during your appointment.
- Be aware that consular staff are working in your interest, so please remain silent.

- The Consular Section reserves the right to refuse admission to people showing symptoms of illness or disturbing the calm and safety environment.
