4. Tenochtitlan Model
The model before you depicts part of “Tenochtitlan”, the ancient capital of the Aztec Empire. By the 16th century, it housed around 200,000 people, while the wider Mexico basin had nearly one million.
The city was divided into four zones and twenty districts, connected by canals and streets. At its heart stood the Templo Mayor, dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, the God of War, and Tlaloc, the God of Rain.


After the Spanish conquest, much of the city was destroyed to build what we now know as Mexico City historic centre. Centuries later, its ruins were rediscovered, and in 1987 UNESCO declared the site a World Heritage Site.
