JOINT PRESS RELEASE
EMBASSY OF MEXICO IN THE UNITED STATES AND PROMEXICO

THE EMBASSY OF MEXICO IN THE UNITED STATES AND PROMEXICO PROMOTE MEXICAN DESIGN AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN NEW YORK.

MARCH/17/11

  • Mexican design will be featured in the stores of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (MoMA), from April through June 2012.
  • Destination: Mexico will include 100 works of design created by Mexican designers selected by the MoMA.

Through initial work from the Embassy of Mexico, and in a joint promotional effort with ProMexico and Centro University, the Destination: Mexico project is launched with the commercial area of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA). Destination: Mexico, which will take place from April through June 2012, will provide an important stage for highlighting products from Mexican designers in MOMA’s three stores in New York, as well as online.

Since 2005, MoMA has undertaken the Destination: Design project, which has invited designers and artists that create everything from furniture and lighting to home accessories, prints, jewelry and clocks, personal accessories, games, and toys to present and sell their products in the prestigious stores of the museum. Previously, the MoMA has invited designers from countries and cities such as Portugal, South Korea, Berlin, Japan, and Turkey, among others.

This unique opportunity for Mexican design was born out of the success of the Rethinking Tradition: Contemporary Design from Mexico exhibition, curated by Ana Elena Mallet, and exhibited in the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C., from June through November 2010. Following the visit of the commercial directors of the MoMA to the exhibit, the Embassy of Mexico and the MoMA team reached an agreement to commemorate the Tenth edition of the Destination: Design project, dedicating it to our country.

ProMexico is convinced that this project is a key niche in the promotion of the image of Mexico. Due to the interest in showing the best of Mexican design, positioning our country as an exporter of creative products of high quality and innovative design on the high-profile commercial stage that the MoMA locations offer, ProMexico decided to help fund this initiative by dedicating 85 thousand dollars to the development of the project.

In the first stage, ProMexico, in coordination with Centro University of design, cinema and television, launched a talent search for designers that could represent the entire scope of Mexico. Centro University selected more than 500 products from close to 300 designers who will participate in the selections that MoMA will make in the coming months. MoMA has set up interviews with the Mexican suppliers looking to participate in Destination: Mexico.

The Embassy and ProMexico have been collaborating with the MoMA on this opportunity from the beginning to promote Mexican design as well as open up markets in the United States to the best of what contemporary Mexican design has to offer.

This initiative forms a key component of a comprehensive strategy on the part of the Embassy of Mexico and ProMexico to promote design and new Mexican talent for export. Without a doubt, Destination: Mexico provides an exceptional opportunity that joins culture, creativity, and commerce.
