Welcome!

Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Mexico in the Republic of Korea. We hope to provide you with the basic information on the Mexico-Korea relationship, as well as with the activities and services offered by the Embassy, while serving as a link to other interesting sites about Mexico, its bilateral relations and the Mexican Community in this country.

Since the achievement of the Mexico-Korea Strategic Partnership in 2005, relations between both countries have intensified in all sectors. Political contacts are frequent and the economic, academic and cultural exchanges are constantly expanding.

In the economic field, trade and investment have increased to the extent that today Korea is the 6th largest partner of Mexico in the world. Tourism continues to grow and we are intensifying our efforts to promote all sectors, including extensive and diverse programs of Cultural Promotion.

On January 26th, 2014, Mexico and the Republic of Korea celebrated 52 years of diplomatic relations. In this sense, both countries have seen the bilateral relationship growing comprehensively since 1961, when President Roh Tae-woo, visited Mexico, being the first South Korean president to visit a Latin America country. Since then, both countries have held six presidential visits (Ernesto Zedillo, 1996; Kim Young-sam, 1997; Vicente Fox, 2001; Lee Myung- bak in 2010 and 2012 (G20, Los Cabos), and Felipe Calderon in 2010 (G20 Seoul). These visits have given impetus and substance to the bilateral and multilateral agenda.

Mexico and Korea have excellent political, economic and cooperative relations, although there is still a huge potential for the development of all aspects of the bilateral relationship. As emerging nations, both countries share common visions in terms of economic and social development, open markets, disarmament, democracy and human rights, regional cooperation and global responsibility. The two countries are active members of the United Nations (UN), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the G20, the Forum of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and MIKTA, among others.

On August 8th, 2013, I presented credentials to President Park Geun- hye, to whom I reiterated the interest of Mexico to graduate up the strategic partnership established in 2005. Last year, during the first months of their governments, President Peña Nieto and Presidents Park met twice. At the same time, our Foreign Ministers maintain constant communication and it is expected that at the first opportunity both Presidents will pay reciprocal state visits.
